A Nationwide Station Makeover
At the heart of this change is the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, an ambitious initiative by the Ministry of Railways to redevelop more than 1,300 stations. Unlike past efforts that often felt like cosmetic touch-ups, this scheme uses a long-term master
plan for each station, ensuring that upgrades are tailored to local needs and future growth. The goal is to transform these transit points into world-class 'city centres' that serve as integrated hubs for transportation and commerce. As of early 2026, work has been completed at 180 stations, with hundreds more in progress, marking a significant acceleration in project execution by Indian Railways.
More Than Just a Fresh Coat of Paint
The focus of these upgrades extends far beyond aesthetics, targeting the core elements of passenger comfort and convenience. Revamped stations now feature vastly improved waiting areas, clean and hygienic toilet facilities, and executive lounges. To tackle congestion, a major source of traveller stress, dedicated passenger holding areas are being established at 76 major stations. These zones provide organised spaces with seating, drinking water, and ticketing facilities, effectively decongesting platforms during peak hours. The design of the new station buildings is often inspired by local culture and heritage, such as the Modhera Sun Temple-inspired design for Ahmedabad station, blending modernity with tradition.
Technology for a Seamless Journey
Technology is a cornerstone of the new station experience. Free high-speed Wi-Fi, once a luxury, is becoming a standard feature. Clear, bright, digital passenger information systems and signages are replacing outdated boards, reducing confusion and helping travellers navigate the sprawling complexes with ease. These tech upgrades ensure that passengers have reliable, real-time information at their fingertips, from train schedules to platform changes. The introduction of 'One Station One Product' kiosks also provides a platform for local artisans and products, integrating the station into the regional economy while offering unique shopping opportunities for travellers.
A Focus on Accessibility and Safety
A crucial aspect of the redevelopment is making stations accessible to everyone. The installation of lifts, escalators, and barrier-free ramps ensures that elderly passengers and persons with disabilities (Divyangjans) can navigate stations safely and independently. Wider foot-over-bridges are being built to facilitate smoother crowd movement and prevent dangerous stampedes. Safety has also been enhanced through comprehensive CCTV surveillance, often powered by AI, and better lighting across station premises. These measures create a more secure environment, contributing significantly to a passenger's peace of mind during their journey.
The Proof is in the Passenger Experience
While the physical transformation of stations is visually striking, the true measure of success is the impact on travellers. By focusing on fundamental needs—cleanliness, safety, comfort, and reliable information—Indian Railways is addressing long-standing pain points. Studies have consistently shown a gap in satisfaction between major urban hubs and smaller regional stations, primarily due to a lack of basic amenities in the latter. The Amrit Bharat scheme directly targets this disparity by modernising stations across tier-2 and tier-3 cities. A parliamentary committee has even recommended periodic passenger satisfaction surveys to ensure the redevelopments are meeting their goals, indicating a systemic shift towards a more passenger-centric railway network.
