The Convenience Trap
Unified Payments Interface (UPI) AutoPay has revolutionised recurring payments in India. Introduced by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), it allows users to authorise businesses to collect scheduled payments for services like OTT subscriptions,
mobile recharges, insurance premiums, and mutual fund SIPs. The process is seamless: you approve a mandate one time with your UPI PIN, and future payments are debited automatically. This convenience is its biggest selling point, eliminating missed due dates and manual payment hassles. However, this same automated ease creates a significant risk if not managed carefully.
How Your Wealth Silently Drains
The danger of unmanaged mandates lies in 'subscription creep' and forgotten payments. It often starts with a free trial for an app or a discounted gym membership. You sign up, authorise the UPI mandate, and then forget about it. When the trial ends, the service starts charging you. These are often small amounts — ₹99, ₹199, ₹499 — that barely register as they leave your account. Over months and years, multiple forgotten subscriptions can add up to a substantial sum, quietly eating into your savings and derailing your financial goals. This slow leak is often hard to notice amidst dozens of other monthly transactions.
Your Guide to Regaining Control
The good news is that taking back control is straightforward. It requires a quick financial audit of your active mandates. While RBI guidelines ensure you get a pre-debit notification 24 hours before a charge, these alerts can get lost in a flood of messages. A proactive review is the most effective strategy. You can view and manage all mandates you have created across different apps through a central portal, or check within each UPI app individually.
Step 1: Locate All Your Mandates
The most comprehensive way to find every active mandate linked to your mobile number is through the official NPCI UPI Help portal (upihelp.npci.org.in). After logging in with your UPI-linked mobile number and an OTP, you can navigate to a section that displays all active and expired mandates across all banks and apps. Alternatively, you can check within each UPI app you use, as they each have a dedicated section for managing mandates. On Google Pay: Tap your profile icon, then go to 'Autopay' to see your active mandates. On PhonePe: Tap your profile icon, go to the 'AutoPay' section under 'Payment Management'. * On Paytm: Use the search bar to find “Automatic Payments” or “UPI AutoPay,” which will take you to the mandate management page.
Step 2: Review, Revoke, or Pause
Once you have the list of all your active mandates, review each one. Ask yourself: “Do I still use this service? Is it providing value for money?” For any subscription or service you no longer need, use the 'Cancel' or 'Revoke Mandate' option. The app will ask for your UPI PIN to confirm the cancellation, and future automatic payments for that service will stop. Most apps also offer a 'Pause' option, which allows you to temporarily suspend payments without cancelling the mandate entirely, useful if you plan to resume a service later.
Step 3: Build a Healthy Habit
To prevent this problem from recurring, make it a habit to perform this mandate audit every few months. Set a recurring calendar reminder for a 'Subscription Review Day'. When signing up for new services, be mindful of the recurring payment you are authorising. If it’s a free trial, set an immediate reminder to cancel it before the first charge hits if you don't intend to continue. Being conscious of where your money is going automatically is a cornerstone of modern financial hygiene.
