A Golden Defence in Japan
After a triumphant campaign at the Hangzhou Games where both the men's and women's teams secured gold, India is looking for a repeat performance. The T20 cricket tournament is one of the most anticipated events of the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Games, which run
from September 19 to October 4. All cricket matches will be played at the Kōrogi Sports Park in Aichi Prefecture. Given their high T20I rankings, both Indian teams have earned direct entry into the quarter-finals, bypassing the preliminary group stages. This gives them a shorter, more direct path to the medal rounds, but also means every match is a high-stakes knockout encounter.
Women's Team: Path to the Final
The Indian women's team, led by captain Harmanpreet Kaur, will be the first to begin their title defence. Their campaign starts with a quarter-final clash against hosts Japan on September 18. A victory there would propel them into the semi-finals, scheduled for September 20. The grand finale, the gold medal match, is set to be played on September 22, with the bronze medal match taking place earlier the same day. The women's tournament is an eight-team straight knockout competition, making every game a must-win from the very start.
Women's Team: Players to Watch
Captain Harmanpreet Kaur and vice-captain Smriti Mandhana will once again be the pillars of the batting lineup. Joining them are explosive opener Shafali Verma and the dependable all-rounder Deepti Sharma. The squad blends experience with exciting talent, including Richa Ghosh behind the stumps and the formidable pace of Renuka Singh. With a full-strength team expected to take the field, the women in blue are strong favourites to stand atop the podium once again.
Men's Team: Schedule and Knockout Challenge
The men's tournament begins its preliminary rounds on September 24, but Team India will join the action later. As one of the top-seeded nations, India gets a direct entry into the quarter-finals, which are slated to begin on September 28. India's first match will be against the runners-up from Group A of the preliminary stage. If the team advances, the semi-finals will be held on October 1, with the gold and bronze medal matches concluding the tournament on October 3. Interestingly, this could lead to a situation where two different Indian men's teams are playing in two different countries on the same day, as a home series is scheduled concurrently.
Men's Team: A New-Look Squad
Reflecting the packed international calendar, the men's squad for the Asian Games will be led by Shreyas Iyer. He will captain a side that features a mix of established international players and rising stars. Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan are expected to be key figures in the batting order, supported by the all-round capabilities of Axar Patel and Washington Sundar. The pace attack will be spearheaded by Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh, offering a potent combination of speed and skill. The inclusion of teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi also adds an element of youthful excitement to the squad's title defence.
Understanding the Tournament Format
Both competitions will be played in the fast-paced Twenty20 International (T20I) format. The women's event is straightforward: an eight-team knockout bracket. The men's tournament involves ten teams. The six lower-seeded teams are split into two groups for a preliminary round. The top two teams from each group then advance to the quarter-finals, where they will face the four top-seeded teams: India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. From the quarter-finals onward, it is a single-elimination bracket to determine the medallists.
