The New Reality of Lounge Access
For years, a premium credit card was an all-access pass to airport lounge comfort. That reality has changed. Facing rising costs due to increased usage, banks are moving away from offering unconditional free visits. Now, many major issuers like HDFC Bank,
ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank have introduced quarterly spending requirements. This means your ability to access a lounge before your flight depends not just on the card you hold, but on how much you've spent on it in the preceding months. For most cardholders, lounge access is no longer a static benefit but a conditional privilege that must be actively earned.
Step 1: Know Your Card's Target
The first step is to become a student of your own credit card's terms and conditions. Banks are required to communicate these changes, but it's easy to miss an email or SMS. Log in to your bank's mobile app or official website and search for your specific card's lounge access policy. Look for a section detailing the spending milestone and the qualification period. For instance, many ICICI Bank cards now require a spend of ₹35,000 to ₹75,000 in a calendar quarter to unlock lounge access for the next quarter. HDFC Bank has also implemented spending criteria for many of its popular cards, like Regalia, while Axis Bank requires spends of around ₹50,000 in the previous three months for several of its cards. Knowing your exact target is the foundation of your plan.
Step 2: Strategise Your Big-Ticket Purchases
Once you know the spending target, the next move is to align your major purchases with your qualification quarter. Are you planning to buy a new smartphone, laptop, or home appliance? Time that purchase to fall within the quarter where you need to meet your spending goal. The same applies to annual insurance premiums, vacation bookings, or even festival shopping. Instead of spreading these large expenses across different payment methods, consolidate them onto the one credit card you use for lounge access. This is the quickest way to meet a significant portion of your spending requirement in one go, without altering your fundamental budget.
Step 3: Make Your Card the Default for Daily Spends
Big purchases are helpful, but consistent, everyday spending is what will reliably get you across the finish line. Make your primary travel card the default payment method for all your routine expenses. This includes everything from groceries and fuel to dining out and online shopping. While a single ₹500 grocery bill might seem small, these transactions add up significantly over a three-month period. By channelling all this organic spending onto one card, you ensure that every rupee is contributing towards your lounge access goal. It’s about building a habit of using that specific card for every possible transaction, transforming small spends into a powerful cumulative total.
Step 4: Leverage Bill Payments and Rent
Don't overlook the power of recurring monthly payments. Most banks and third-party apps now allow you to pay utility bills—such as electricity, mobile, and internet—using your credit card. Many platforms also facilitate rent payments via credit card for a small fee. While some specific transaction categories might be excluded from spending calculations, bill payments are often counted. Adding these substantial, predictable expenses to your card each month can provide a major and consistent boost toward meeting your quarterly target. Always double-check your bank's terms to see which types of payments are considered eligible spends.
What If You Can't Meet the Target?
Sometimes, meeting a high spending threshold isn't feasible or financially prudent. If that's the case, you still have options. Consider if a different credit card might be a better fit; some super-premium, invite-only cards like the HDFC Infinia or ICICI Emeralde still offer unlimited access with no spending conditions, though they have high eligibility criteria. Alternatively, simply paying for lounge access as a one-off might be more economical than overspending to meet a target. A single visit can cost between ₹1,500 and ₹4,000, which may be a small price for comfort on a long journey. Evaluate the cost-benefit for your travel frequency.
