This indicates the plant has recovered from the stress of repotting and is actively growing. Another way to check is to give the plant a very gentle tug. If you feel resistance, it means the roots have spread out and anchored themselves into the new soil. If the plant lifts easily, it needs more time. Transitioning your plant to a self-watering system is simple if you follow a patient approach. First, pot your plant using a lightweight, well-aerating potting mix; dense garden soil won't work as it prevents proper wicking. Moisten the soil thoroughly until it is evenly damp, which settles the soil and eliminates air pockets. During this period, keep the reservoir empty. Once you see consistent new growth and the plant feels secure in its pot, you can perform your first reservoir fill. Add water through the designated fill tube until the indicator shows it is full.
Heeding the 'Guidance' Clause
The phrase "if guidance recommends it" is a reminder that not all plants are the same. Thirsty tropical plants like ferns or calatheas, which love consistent moisture, are perfect candidates for self-watering systems. In contrast, succulents, cacti, and other drought-tolerant plants prefer their soil to dry out completely. For these, a self-watering pot might create an environment that is too moist, and you may choose to never fill the reservoir, continuing to water from the top only when the soil is bone dry. One common mistake is to keep the reservoir perpetually full. Most plants benefit from a brief 'dry-out' period, which allows air to get to the roots. Let the reservoir go empty for a day or two before refilling. Another issue is using the wrong soil. Heavy, compacted soil will not wick water properly and can become a soggy mess, suffocating the roots. Always choose a high-quality potting mix, often containing peat moss, coco coir, and perlite, designed for containers. Finally, if you ever notice a foul smell or wilting leaves despite a full reservoir, you might have root rot.
