This cycle is often marketed with buzzwords like 'muscle confusion', the idea being that you must constantly 'shock' your body with new exercises. While variety has its place, changing your entire workout too frequently can be counterproductive. It makes tracking progress nearly impossible, as you never give your body enough time to adapt and get stronger in any specific movement. If you're constantly changing exercises, rep ranges, and rest periods, you have no stable benchmark to measure your improvement against.
Introducing the Single-Variable Approach
The single-variable approach is the antidote to this chaos. At its core is a simple but powerful principle: change only one thing at a time. This method is a direct application of progressive overload, which is the foundation of all strength and muscle gain. Progressive overload means gradually increasing the stress placed on your muscles over time to stimulate growth and adaptation. Option 2: Increase Weight. Now that you’ve mastered 12 reps, you could go back to 8-10 reps but increase the weight to 17.5kg dumbbells. Your focus for the next few weeks would be to build your reps back up with this new, heavier weight. By isolating the variable, you create a clear path for progression. This same logic applies to any exercise, whether it's bodyweight squats, barbell rows, or overhead presses.
Beyond the Weight Room

If you're a runner, you can apply the single-variable approach to improve your endurance and speed. For a few weeks, keep your pace constant and focus only on increasing the duration of your run, adding just a few minutes each time. Alternatively, you could keep your distance the same but work on slightly increasing your pace (intensity). By not trying to run both farther and faster simultaneously, you allow your body to adapt more efficiently and reduce the risk of burnout or injury.
