A New Era of Connectivity
For decades, the journey to Kashmir was defined by the winding and often unpredictable Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. The new Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) has changed everything. The Vande Bharat Express now covers the distance between
Jammu Tawi and Srinagar in approximately 4 hours and 50 minutes, a significant reduction from the 8-11 hours it could take by road. This all-weather route bypasses the challenges oflandslides and snowfall that frequently plague the highway, offering travellers a reliable and comfortable alternative. The service has been met with such high demand that two trains are already running at full capacity, and a third has been approved to increase frequency, underscoring its popularity among tourists and locals alike.
Booking Your Journey
Tickets for the Jammu Tawi-Srinagar Vande Bharat can be booked through the official IRCTC website and mobile app. The train offers two classes: AC Chair Car (CC) and Executive Chair Car (EC), with the latter providing more spacious seating and enhanced services. Given the high demand, it is advisable to book your tickets well in advance, especially if you plan to travel during peak tourist seasons like summer (May to August) or long weekends. The route is not just fast but also scenic, passing over engineering marvels like the Chenab Bridge, the world's highest railway arch bridge. The train typically runs six days a week, so be sure to check the schedule when planning your departure and return dates.
From Srinagar Station to Your Destination
The Vande Bharat terminates at Srinagar railway station (SINA). While the train journey is streamlined, your planning shouldn't end there. The station is located a few kilometres from the city's main tourist hubs like Dal Lake and Lal Chowk. You will need to arrange for onward transport to reach your hotel, houseboat, or next destination. Pre-paid taxi counters and private cabs are generally available, but it’s wise to have a plan. If you are travelling in a group or with significant luggage, consider pre-booking a vehicle through your hotel or a local travel agent to ensure a smooth transfer. This is especially important if you plan to head directly to other popular destinations like Gulmarg or Pahalgam, which are a few hours' drive from Srinagar.
Timing Your Trip with the Seasons
Kashmir offers a different kind of magic in every season, and the Vande Bharat makes it accessible year-round. Your ideal travel time depends on what you want to experience. Spring (March-May) is famous for its vibrant tulip festival and blooming almond orchards. Summer (June-August) provides pleasant weather, making it perfect for sightseeing, shikara rides on the Dal Lake, and visiting the Mughal gardens. However, this is also the peak tourist season, so expect higher prices and larger crowds. Autumn (September-October) paints the valley in hues of gold and red, with the Chinar trees at their most spectacular. For those who dream of a winter wonderland, a visit between December and February offers snow-covered landscapes and opportunities for skiing in Gulmarg.
Crafting a Realistic Itinerary
The time saved by taking the train allows for a more relaxed and immersive itinerary. Instead of dedicating an entire day to road travel, you can arrive in Srinagar by midday and have the afternoon for local exploration. Consider spending your first day settling in, enjoying a shikara ride, or exploring the lakeside markets. Plan for at least 4-5 days to do justice to the region. A typical itinerary could include two days in Srinagar for local sights, a day trip or overnight stay in Gulmarg for its meadows and gondola ride, and another day trip to Pahalgam, the 'Valley of Shepherds'. With the train making travel more predictable, you can confidently plan your days without buffering for road closures, allowing you to truly soak in the beauty of Kashmir.
