Ending the long-standing need for travellers from the Northeast to transit through metro hubs like Delhi or Kolkata, Air India Express has launched the region's first-ever direct flights to the United Arab Emirates. The Guwahati-Dubai service is scheduled
to begin on August 4, 2026, with the Guwahati-Abu Dhabi route following on August 7. This development is a significant milestone, transforming Guwahati's Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport into a true international gateway and fulfilling a long-held ambition for Assam and its neighbouring states. These non-stop services promise to dramatically reduce travel time for tourists, business professionals, students, and the large diaspora from the Northeast residing in the Gulf.
Why Flight Frequency Is Your First Check
While the announcement is exciting, the practical details are what matter most for trip planning. The headline advice holds true: your first check should be flight frequency. Initially, these new international routes will not operate daily. The Guwahati-Dubai service is slated to run once a week on Tuesdays. The flight to Abu Dhabi will also operate weekly, with some sources indicating a Friday departure and others a Wednesday. This limited frequency is a critical factor. A weekly schedule means less flexibility for the length of your stay. A short business trip or a weekend getaway becomes difficult if the return flight is a full seven days later. For tourists, it means planning your itinerary around a fixed departure day rather than choosing dates that suit you best.
Decoding Timetables and Fares
Beyond frequency, the specific timings are just as important. The Tuesday flight to Dubai departs Guwahati at 12:25 PM, arriving at 4:10 PM local time. The return flight leaves Dubai at 5:10 PM, landing back in Guwahati at 12:25 AM the next day. The Abu Dhabi flight has a scheduled departure from Guwahati at 11:30 AM, arriving at 3:15 PM, with the return service leaving at 4:15 PM and arriving at 11:30 PM. These timings are generally convenient, but the late-night arrival back in Guwahati requires planning for onward travel. As for cost, introductory one-way fares have been announced, starting from around ₹19,759 for Abu Dhabi and ₹21,188 for Dubai, though these are subject to change and availability.
