A Landmark in Connectivity
The introduction of the Vande Bharat service to Srinagar is the culmination of the historic Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project. This engineering marvel, which includes the world's highest railway bridge over the Chenab River, provides
a reliable, all-weather connection to the valley, which was often cut off by road during heavy snowfall or landslides. The project, which was fully completed and operationalised in phases, now directly integrates the Kashmir Valley into the Indian Railways network, a long-cherished dream. The service was initially launched between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Srinagar in June 2025 and was later extended to Jammu Tawi in April 2026, creating a seamless rail corridor.
Slash Your Travel Time
Perhaps the most significant benefit for travellers is the drastic reduction in journey time. The road trip between Jammu and Srinagar typically takes eight to ten hours, and can be much longer depending on traffic and weather conditions on the NH-44 highway. The Vande Bharat Express covers the distance of approximately 269 kilometres between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar in under five hours. This time-saving aspect allows for more relaxed itineraries, giving tourists extra hours or even a full day to spend exploring the valley rather than navigating challenging roads. Two pairs of trains run six days a week, offering both morning and afternoon departures from both cities.
The Onboard Experience: Comfort and Views
The Vande Bharat Express is known for its aircraft-like amenities, providing a level of comfort previously unavailable on this route. The trains are fully air-conditioned with reclining seats, onboard catering, and clean, modern bio-toilets. For travellers, the large panoramic windows are a major highlight, offering breathtaking views of the Himalayan landscape, including the picturesque Chenab bridge, without the stress of driving. Additional features include Wi-Fi, GPS-based passenger information systems, and mobile charging sockets at every seat, ensuring a connected and comfortable journey. The executive class even features 360-degree rotating seats to help you make the most of the stunning scenery.
A Game-Changer for All-Season Tourism
Unreliable road access, especially during the harsh winter months, has long been a bottleneck for Kashmir's tourism potential. The all-weather Vande Bharat train service changes this completely. It provides a dependable mode of transport year-round, opening up opportunities for winter tourism in destinations like Gulmarg for skiing without the uncertainty of road closures. This reliability is not just a convenience; it's a transformative development that promises a more consistent flow of tourists throughout the year, benefiting local economies beyond the traditional peak seasons. The trains are also specially equipped with winterisation technology to ensure they operate smoothly even in sub-zero temperatures.
Integrating the Train into Your Kashmir Itinerary
The Vande Bharat service makes planning a multi-destination trip in Jammu and Kashmir easier than ever. Travellers from across India can now reach Jammu Tawi by train and seamlessly switch to the Vande Bharat for a quick and comfortable journey into Srinagar. From Srinagar, local rail services on the Baramulla-Sangaldan corridor can connect you to other parts of the valley, bringing destinations like Pahalgam and Kokernag within easier reach from nearby stations. This integrated network allows for more flexible and ambitious travel plans, such as combining a pilgrimage to the Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra with a holiday in the meadows of Gulmarg, all primarily by rail.
