A Major Boost for Regional Connectivity
The much-anticipated Vande Bharat sleeper service between Mumbai and Bengaluru is now confirmed to run via Pune and Solapur, solidifying a crucial high-speed link for passengers in Maharashtra. This decision follows assessments of operational feasibility
and high passenger demand along this economic corridor. While there was some discussion about an alternative route via Miraj, railway officials have finalised the Pune-Solapur alignment, citing its suitability for high-speed operations of up to 130 kmph. This development is a significant relief for frequent travellers from Pune and Solapur, who were concerned about potentially being bypassed. The inclusion of these cities ensures they are part of India's rapidly expanding modern rail network, offering a faster, more comfortable alternative to existing train services and overnight buses.
What is the Vande Bharat Sleeper?
The Vande Bharat sleeper is the long-distance, overnight counterpart to the popular Vande Bharat chair-car trains. The first sleeper service was launched in January 2026, marking a new era for overnight journeys in India. These trains are designed to replace premium services like the Rajdhani Express on key routes. A standard 16-coach train can carry 823 passengers across three classes: one AC First Class coach (24 berths), four AC Two-Tier coaches (188 berths), and eleven AC Three-Tier coaches (611 berths). The focus is on providing a superior travel experience with enhanced comfort and reduced journey times, particularly for routes spanning 800 to 1,200 kilometres.
A New Standard in Overnight Travel
Passengers on the Vande Bharat sleeper can expect a significant upgrade in amenities. The trains feature ergonomically designed, better-cushioned berths, automatic doors for a quieter and cleaner environment, and advanced suspension to minimise jerks and noise. For hygiene, the trains are equipped with bio-vacuum toilets with odour control and sensor-based taps, and First AC passengers will even have access to hot shower facilities. Safety is also a top priority, with the indigenous 'Kavach' anti-collision system, CCTV surveillance, and an emergency talk-back unit in each coach. A notable passenger-friendly feature is the elimination of 'Reservation Against Cancellation' (RAC) tickets, guaranteeing that every traveller has a full berth.
Impact on Pune and Solapur
For travellers between Pune and Bengaluru, the new service could reduce travel time by three to four hours from the current 18-20 hours on existing trains. The Mumbai-Bengaluru journey is expected to be cut down to around 14 to 16 hours from the current 22 hours. This time saving makes train travel a far more competitive option compared to tiring overnight bus journeys or expensive flights. The Pune-Solapur corridor is a vital commercial and industrial belt, and this enhanced connectivity is expected to boost business travel and tourism. By providing a premium, reliable, and fast overnight service, the Vande Bharat sleeper will integrate these cities more closely with major metropolitan hubs like Mumbai and Bengaluru, fostering economic growth and creating new opportunities for local businesses.
Timeline and What to Expect
While railway officials have confirmed the route, an official launch date for the Mumbai-Bengaluru service via Pune and Solapur is still awaited. A possible inauguration date of November 1 has been suggested, but the final timetable, fares, and reservation details are yet to be announced by the Railway Board. Speed trials for the service are expected to be conducted soon. The introduction of this service is part of a larger government vision to operate 4,500 Vande Bharat trains across the country by 2047, fundamentally transforming India's railway infrastructure and passenger experience.
