Meet 'Dewi', Your New Digital Guide
The centerpiece of this new digital strategy is 'Dewi', an artificial intelligence (AI) avatar. Introduced as the new digital face of the embassy, Dewi is designed to serve as a virtual guide for anyone interested in the multifaceted relationship between
the two nations. The name 'Dewi', meaning goddess in Indonesian and derived from the Sanskrit 'devi', was chosen to resonate locally and its launch was auspiciously timed with the Navaratri and Durga Puja festivals. This initiative represents a significant step in the embassy's public outreach, aiming to make information more accessible and engaging for a wide audience.
What Information Will Be Shared?
Dewi will provide a comprehensive range of updates covering key aspects of the bilateral relationship. Followers can expect regular information on Indian culture and heritage, travel and tourism opportunities, and details about scholarships for Indonesian students to study in India. For the business community, the avatar will share updates on trade and investment, highlighting opportunities in both countries. Crucially, it will also disseminate important consular service updates, providing timely information for the Indian diaspora and visa applicants. The embassy has stated that Dewi will bring stories and information about the India-Indonesia partnership closer to its audience, ensuring everyone stays informed and connected.
Connecting with a Diverse Audience
The initiative is tailored for a broad audience. This includes the substantial Indian community in Indonesia, which consists of approximately 130,000 Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) and around 15,000 Non-Resident Indians (NRIs). Many in this community are professionals working as engineers, teachers, and chartered accountants. Beyond the diaspora, the service aims to engage Indonesian citizens who are curious about India, whether for tourism, education, or business purposes. By providing information in both English and Bahasa Indonesia, the embassy aims to bridge any language barriers and foster a deeper understanding between the peoples of both nations.
A New Chapter in Digital Diplomacy
This move is part of a broader trend of leveraging technology in modern diplomacy. By using an AI avatar, the Indian Embassy is embracing innovative tools to conduct public outreach in a more dynamic and interactive manner. The launch reflects how diplomatic missions are exploring artificial intelligence to expand their reach, especially in a digitally savvy region like Southeast Asia. This approach aligns with India's 'Act East' policy, which focuses on deepening engagement with countries in the region. The India-Indonesia relationship has been steadily growing, marked by a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership established in 2018 and expanding cooperation in defence, maritime security, and trade. This digital route is the latest tool to support that growing partnership.
How to Access the Updates
Accessing the information shared by Dewi is straightforward. The embassy launched the AI avatar primarily through its official social media channels, particularly its account on X (formerly Twitter). Interested individuals can follow the Embassy of India in Jakarta's official account to receive regular updates directly in their feed. The embassy's call to action, 'Follow us, and say Halo to Dewi!', encourages direct engagement and makes connecting with this new stream of information simple and user-friendly for anyone with a social media presence.
