At its heart, El Niño is a natural and recurring climate phenomenon characterised by the unusual warming of the sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. This isn't just a localised event; this vast expanse of warm water
releases a tremendous amount of heat into the atmosphere, altering air pressure and disrupting typical global weather patterns. The result is a domino effect felt across continents, influencing everything from rainfall in Southeast Asia to temperatures in North America. For India, the primary concern is its historically strong, though not guaranteed, connection to a weaker summer monsoon.
The Critical Monsoon Connection
India's economy and the livelihoods of hundreds of millions depend on the annual southwest monsoon. El Niño often throws a wrench in this system. The altered atmospheric circulation can suppress the development of the rain-bearing clouds that are vital for the monsoon. This can lead to a delayed onset, prolonged dry spells, and an overall reduction in rainfall across the subcontinent. While not every El Niño year results in a drought, a strong correlation exists. A significant number of India's major droughts have occurred during El Niño years, making its development a closely watched indicator for the country's economic health. The most immediate and severe impact of a poor monsoon is felt in the agricultural sector. A significant portion of India's farmland is rain-fed, making it highly vulnerable to erratic weather. Deficient rainfall can devastate the Kharif (monsoon) crop season, affecting major staples like rice, maize, and soybeans. Furthermore, higher temperatures associated with El Niño can increase electricity demand for cooling, putting a strain on power grids at a time when hydropower generation might be low.

Current international forecasts for 2026 indicate a strengthening El Niño event, with a high probability of it becoming a 'very strong' or even historic event by late in the year. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has already forecast a below-normal monsoon season for 2026, a prediction consistent with the developing El Niño. As of early August 2026, the monsoon has already shown signs of stress, with cumulative rainfall across the country running at a deficit. While the full impact of a strengthening El Niño on the remainder of the season is yet to be seen, authorities are on high alert, preparing contingency plans for potential shortfalls in crop production and water supply.
