The Familiar Frustration of Booking
For decades, booking a reserved train ticket during high-demand periods has been a game of chance and speed. The system would slow to a crawl, sessions would expire, and tickets for popular routes would vanish in seconds. This experience was particularly
acute during the Tatkal booking window, where millions of users would log on simultaneously, creating a traffic surge that the legacy infrastructure struggled to handle. The Passenger Reservation System (PRS), first computerised in 1986, has been the backbone of railway ticketing, but with nearly 89% of reserved tickets now booked online, the need for a fundamental overhaul became critical.
Inside the Next-Generation Upgrade
Indian Railways has begun a phased rollout of a next-generation, cloud-based Passenger Reservation System, developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS). This isn't just a minor tweak; it's a complete architectural shift designed for the modern digital era. The most significant change is the sheer increase in capacity. The old system could process around 32,000 ticket bookings per minute. The new platform boosts this capacity nearly fivefold, aiming to handle over 1.5 lakh bookings per minute. This move is designed to make the system more resilient, scalable, and reliable for millions of daily users.
A Tenfold Leap in Enquiry Handling
Beyond just booking tickets, the system is also being fortified to handle a massive increase in passenger enquiries. This includes checking seat availability, PNR status, and waitlist positions. The previous system could manage about 4 lakh enquiries per minute. The upgraded PRS is projected to handle over 40 lakh enquiries per minute—a tenfold increase. This means users should experience faster response times when searching for trains or checking their ticket status, reducing the likelihood of the system slowing down even before the booking stage begins.
What This Means for Tatkal and Peak Hours
The primary goal of this enhanced capacity is to make the booking experience smoother during extreme peak loads, such as the Tatkal window. With the ability to process significantly more transactions every minute, the system is better equipped to manage the deluge of simultaneous requests without crashing. Early data from the beta version of the redesigned IRCTC website, which launched in July 2026, already shows promising results. According to reports, Tatkal bookings completed within the first three minutes of the window opening increased by over 5%. While this doesn't guarantee a confirmed ticket for everyone, it signals a more stable and efficient platform that gives genuine passengers a better chance.
More Than Just Speed: A Better User Experience
The upgrade is not just about backend power; it also comes with front-end improvements for passengers. A redesigned IRCTC beta website has been launched with a cleaner, less cluttered interface. The new portal aims to reduce distractions like irrelevant pop-ups and CAPTCHAs, which often slowed users down at critical moments. The process has been streamlined with fewer steps, and users can now see seat availability across all classes on a single screen. Furthermore, the new system will feature a multilingual interface, making it more accessible to passengers across the country.
