What Are AI Agents on UPI?
Imagine telling your phone, “Order my usual weekly groceries, but don't spend more than ₹2,000,” and an AI assistant does the rest—placing the order and completing the payment without you needing to approve the final transaction. This is the core idea
behind AI agents on UPI. These are not just chatbots that answer questions; they are software programs designed to take action on your behalf within a set of rules you define. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is developing a framework, reportedly called the Unified Agent Protocol (UAP), to allow these verified AI agents to securely make payments through the UPI network. This moves AI from just being a recommendation engine to an active participant in commerce.
From Taps to Conversations
Today, UPI requires you to manually initiate and approve every single payment by entering a PIN. The new system aims to make payments conversational and autonomous. This evolution began with concepts like 'Hello! UPI', an initiative to enable voice-enabled payments. The introduction of AI agents is the next logical step. Instead of just understanding a voice command to pay a specific person, an AI agent could manage a complete task. For example, it could monitor flight prices for a trip you're planning, book the tickets when the price drops below a certain threshold, and pay for it automatically, all based on your initial instructions.
How Would It Actually Work?
The proposed system will likely build upon existing UPI features. Two key components are UPI Circle and Reserve Pay. UPI Circle allows a primary user to delegate payment authority to a secondary user—in this case, the AI agent. Reserve Pay lets you block funds in your account for future debits. Under the new framework, you would give a registered AI agent a specific mandate: what it can buy, which merchants it can use, and how much it can spend. For instance, you could authorise an agent to pay your electricity bill every month as long as it's below ₹1,500. The agent would handle the payment automatically, and the transaction would be completed without you needing to enter your PIN each time, as long as it stays within the pre-approved limits.
The Obvious Benefits: Convenience and Control
The primary advantage is unprecedented convenience. Routine and frequent low-value purchases, such as groceries, cab rides, or ordering food, could be completely automated. This would save time and reduce the manual effort of managing recurring payments, which is an improvement on the existing UPI AutoPay system that is typically limited to fixed subscriptions. Furthermore, the framework promises granular control. Users would set the rules, defining spending limits, approved merchant categories, and the duration of the agent's authority. This is designed to ensure the AI operates strictly within the boundaries you set, giving you control without constant intervention.
The Big Questions: Security and Accountability
Allowing software to spend money automatically raises valid security concerns. What if an agent is hacked or misunderstands an instruction? The NPCI's framework is expected to include robust safeguards like mandatory identity checks for agents, clear audit trails for every transaction, and defined spending limits to minimise risk. Unlike existing auto-debit systems, where cancelling a mandate can sometimes be tedious, the goal is to give users full control to pause or revoke an agent's authority instantly through their UPI app. A critical part of the official rollout will be establishing a clear liability framework that specifies who is responsible—the user, the bank, or the AI provider—if an unauthorised transaction occurs.
