The long journey between Bengaluru and Goa is about to get a major upgrade. A new train service promises to cut travel time significantly, making those dream beach holidays more accessible than ever. Here’s what you need to know about this new link.
A Vande Bharat for the Coast
The
Railway Board has officially approved a new Vande Bharat Express train service connecting Yesvantpur in Bengaluru to Madgaon in Goa. This much-anticipated service is expected to reduce the journey to approximately 13 hours and 20 minutes, offering a faster and more comfortable daytime travel option between the two popular hubs. The train is slated to begin operations in the third week of November 2026, although an exact launch date and fare details are yet to be finalised. This new route is made possible by the completion of the electrification of the Bengaluru-Mangaluru railway line, which allows for faster and more efficient train operations.
The Scenic Route Deconstructed
More than just a faster commute, the journey itself promises to be a highlight. The train will travel via Mangaluru, traversing the stunning landscapes of the Western Ghats. The section between Sakleshpur and Subrahmanya Road is particularly noted for its lush greenery and picturesque views, turning the 13-hour trip into a scenic experience. The train (No. 26655) will depart from Yesvantpur at 7:35 AM and arrive in Madgaon at 8:55 PM. The return service (No. 26656) will leave Madgaon at 8:20 AM and reach Yesvantpur at 9:15 PM. The service will run six days a week, excluding Wednesdays from Yesvantpur and Thursdays from Madgaon.
Key Stops and Connectivity
The new Vande Bharat Express will have 12 intermediate stops, significantly improving connectivity for several towns in Karnataka's interior and coastal regions. Major halts include Hassan, Sakleshpur, Mangaluru Junction, Udupi, Murdeshwar, and Karwar, before the train reaches Madgaon. This provides a direct, premium travel option not just for Goa-bound passengers but also for those travelling to popular coastal and temple towns along the way. With the introduction of this new service, the existing Madgaon-Mangaluru Vande Bharat Express will be discontinued, as its route is being absorbed into the extended Bengaluru-Goa line.
How It Compares to Other Options
Currently, travellers have several options, each with its own trade_offs. Flights are the fastest, with a journey time of about 1 hour and 15 minutes, but this doesn't include travel to and from airports, check_in times, and can be the most expensive option. Existing trains can take anywhere from 14 to over 15 hours. Overnight sleeper buses are a popular choice, taking around 12 to 13 hours, but comfort can be a concern for many. A road trip by car offers flexibility but takes approximately 11 to 13 hours of driving, which can be tiring. The new Vande Bharat train aims to strike a balance, offering a journey time competitive with buses but with superior comfort, amenities, and scenic views, making it an attractive new alternative.
