Secure Your Luggage Like a Pro
Peace of mind is the most important item on any packing list. One of the primary concerns in an open-compartment sleeper coach is the security of your belongings, especially while you sleep. The most effective and time-tested method is to use a sturdy
metal chain and a reliable padlock. Most berths have metal rings or bars underneath the lower seat specifically for this purpose. Thread the chain through the handle of your suitcase or backpack and lock it securely to the frame. This simple step deters opportunistic theft during station halts. For your valuables like your wallet, phone, and documents, never pack them in your main luggage. Keep them in a small crossbody bag or a pouch that you can keep on your person at all times, even while sleeping.
Build Your Personal Comfort Nest
Sleeper class does not include bedding, so you need to bring your own. Comfort is crucial for arriving at your destination well-rested. Instead of a bulky pillow, opt for an inflatable travel pillow that takes up minimal space in your bag. A lightweight sheet or a shawl is also essential. Even on warm nights, the breeze from the open windows or fans can make it chilly. For an uninterrupted night's sleep, an eye mask and a good pair of earplugs are non-negotiable. They help block out the constant light and the diverse sounds of a moving train, from snoring co-passengers to vendors at late-night stops.
Stay Hygienic and Fresh
Maintaining hygiene on a long train journey can be a challenge, but it's much easier with the right supplies. The condition of train washrooms can be unpredictable, so it's wise to be self-sufficient. Pack a small toiletry kit containing wet wipes, hand sanitiser, and paper soap strips. These are invaluable for freshening up without needing to navigate the washroom frequently. A small pack of toilet paper or tissues is also a must-have, as it's rarely provided. A travel-sized face wash and toothbrush will help you feel human after a long night.
Keep Your Electronics Charged
While most sleeper coaches have charging points, they are few and often in high demand. Relying on them is a gamble you might not win. A fully charged power bank is an absolute essential for any modern traveller. It ensures your phone, which serves as your camera, entertainment device, and connection to the outside world, remains functional throughout the journey. To be even more efficient, carry a multi-port charger if you have multiple devices to power up. This allows you to charge everything at once if you do get access to a socket. Don't forget to download movies, music, or podcasts beforehand as train Wi-Fi is often unreliable.
Pack Smart Snacks and Water
While the culinary offerings on Indian trains are part of the experience, from station-side samosas to pantry car meals, it's always a good idea to carry your own supplies. Packing some non-messy, non-perishable snacks like biscuits, fruit, nuts, or homemade parathas ensures you have something to eat if you don't like the available options or if delays occur. Most importantly, carry your own reusable water bottle and buy sealed water to refill it. Staying hydrated is key to feeling good, but always ensure the water is from a reliable source. Avoid accepting open food or drinks from strangers as a general safety precaution.
Dress for Comfort and Convenience
Your clothing choices can significantly impact your comfort. Opt for breathable, layered clothing like cotton track pants and a t-shirt. This allows you to adjust to temperature changes. It can get surprisingly cool at night, so having a light jacket or shawl is a good idea. Wear slip-on shoes or slippers that are easy to take on and off, which is particularly convenient for late-night trips to the washroom or when you’re settling into your berth.
