When choosing a fan, the most important specification to consider is its air movement capacity, measured in cubic feet per minute (CFM). The Home Ventilating Institute provides a simple guideline: you need at least 1 CFM for every square foot of bathroom floor area. So, for an 8-by-10-foot bathroom (80 square feet), you should look for a fan with a rating of at least 80 CFM. For best results, the fan should be run during every shower or bath and for at least 20-30 minutes afterward to ensure all residual steam is cleared. Modern fans with features like humidity sensors, which automatically turn the fan on and off as needed, offer added convenience and efficiency.
Clearing the Air in the Kitchen
Kitchens present a more complex challenge, with pollutants coming from both moisture and the cooking process itself. Gas stoves, in particular, are a significant source of indoor air pollution, releasing contaminants that have been linked to an increased risk of respiratory problems, especially in children. A range hood is the primary line of defence. It is crucial to understand the difference between a ducted (or vented) hood and a recirculating (or ductless) one. A ducted hood is far superior because it captures smoke, grease, and pollutants and expels them outside. A recirculating hood simply filters the air to remove some grease and odours before blowing the air—and all the moisture and combustion gases—right back into your kitchen. Whenever possible, a ducted range hood should be your first choice to truly clean the air. Turning it on a few minutes before you start cooking can help establish a good airflow pattern.
Simple Steps for Fresher Air
Even without a major renovation, you can take simple steps to improve ventilation. If you lack an exhaust fan or if it's undersized, opening a window during and after a shower or while cooking can make a significant difference by allowing fresh air to circulate. In the bathroom, using a squeegee to wipe down shower walls and doors after use removes excess water that would otherwise evaporate into the air. Regularly cleaning your exhaust fan grilles and range hood filters is also vital. When these become clogged with dust and grease, their effectiveness is dramatically reduced. These small maintenance habits, combined with the mindful use of your ventilation systems, contribute to a healthier indoor environment for you and your family.
