A Journey Once Defined by Delays
For decades, reaching the Kashmir Valley meant navigating the unpredictable Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. The road, while scenic, is prone to closures from landslides, heavy snowfall, and traffic congestion, often turning a seven-hour drive into a multi-day
affair. This uncertainty was a significant hurdle for tourists and a constant struggle for locals. The alternative, air travel, could be costly and equally susceptible to weather disruptions. This logistical challenge often limited travel plans and isolated the valley, particularly during the harsh winter months. The dream of a reliable, all-weather connection remained just that—a dream, etched on engineering blueprints for over a century.
The New Reality: Speed and Certainty
The launch of the Vande Bharat Express between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar marks the culmination of the ambitious Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project. This service transforms the journey, slashing travel time to under five hours. The first services were flagged off in 2025, initially connecting Katra to Srinagar, and were later extended to Jammu Tawi in April 2026, creating a direct link between the two capital cities. The demand has been so high that the initial two trains running daily have been operating at full capacity, prompting Indian Railways to increase coach numbers and approve a third Vande Bharat service for the route to meet the growing demand.
An Engineering Marvel Through the Himalayas
The journey is as remarkable as the destination. The USBRL project is one of Indian Railways' most challenging feats, traversing the rugged Himalayan terrain. Passengers are treated to a ride across engineering wonders, including the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world's highest railway bridge, which stands taller than the Eiffel Tower. The route also features India's longest transportation tunnel, T-50, which stretches for nearly 13 kilometres. The Vande Bharat trains on this route are specially designed for the climate, with advanced heating systems to prevent freezing in sub-zero temperatures and a snow-cutting cattle guard to clear tracks, ensuring year-round operation.
What This Changes for Your Travel Plans
The most significant change is all-weather reliability. You can now plan a trip to Kashmir any time of the year with far greater certainty. The Vande Bharat offers a comfortable, safe, and fast alternative to road travel, with modern amenities like rotating seats, large windows for panoramic views, and onboard catering. The current services stop at Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan (Udhampur), SMVD Katra, Reasi, and Banihal, connecting key destinations. This makes it easier to plan multi-destination trips, such as combining a pilgrimage to Vaishno Devi with a holiday in Srinagar. The reduced travel time makes shorter weekend or extended weekend trips from nearby regions a much more viable option.
A Broader Boost for Kashmir
The impact of the new Vande Bharat service extends beyond just tourist convenience. It is seen as a lifeline that is set to boost the region's economy. For the first time, tourists can travel directly from major Indian cities into the heart of the valley by rail, which is expected to significantly increase visitor numbers. Travel agents and cab operators in Kashmir are hopeful this will lead to a tourism boom. The reliable connectivity also opens up new opportunities for trade, allowing Kashmiri agricultural products like apples and saffron to reach markets across India faster and in better condition. It's a transformative link that promises not just to move people, but to bring new prosperity to the valley.
