The Traditional ‘Closed’ System
For decades, the gold standard for ensuring scientific quality has been peer review. Before a study is published, it’s sent to a small group of experts in the same field. These reviewers scrutinise the methodology, results, and conclusions. Traditionally,
this process is 'double-blind'—the reviewers don't know who the authors are, and the authors don't know who the reviewers are. The idea is that anonymity encourages honest, unbiased criticism. However, this closed system has faced growing criticism. Because it happens behind closed doors, it can lack accountability and, in some cases, fail to catch significant errors or even misconduct.
What is Open Peer Review?
Open peer review is an umbrella term for a more transparent approach. It can take several forms. One is 'open identities', where the names of the authors and reviewers are known to each other. Another is 'open reports', where the reviewer reports, along with the authors' responses, are published alongside the final article. Some journals even use 'open participation', inviting the broader scientific community to comment on a paper after publication. Proponents argue this transparency increases accountability, as reviewers are publicly attached to their feedback. This can lead to more constructive, higher-quality reviews and a more civilised scientific debate.
The Link to Fewer Retractions

A retraction is the withdrawal of a published paper because of serious flaws or scientific misconduct, a significant blow to the credibility of the research and its authors. Other analyses support this, with one market report noting that transparent models experience 45% lower retraction rates. Another 2025 analysis found that journals using transparent review had retraction rates that were an order of magnitude lower than journals that did not.
Why Transparency Might Work
There are several theories as to why openness is associated with better outcomes. When reviewers know their names will be attached to their reports, they may be more thorough and constructive. It provides an incentive for them to contribute quality reviews in a timely manner, which could improve research integrity. Knowing that their work will be scrutinised in the open may also discourage authors from submitting substandard or fraudulent research in the first place. This accountability could be a powerful deterrent. Is It a Perfect Solution?
Despite the promising findings, open peer review is not without its critics or challenges. One study found that signed reviews are almost always more positive than unsigned ones, raising fears that openness could lead to undeservedly gentle feedback. The number of retractions has grown dramatically, driven by better detection methods and a 'publish or perish' academic culture that can incentivise poor practices. Finding ways to strengthen peer review is essential for safeguarding the quality of published research. By making the process more transparent, the scientific community can not only improve the quality of its work but also help rebuild public trust by showing that science is a rigorous, self-correcting process.
