The popular belief that houseplants are tiny air-purifying machines can be traced back to a landmark 1989 NASA study. Researchers were looking for ways to clean the air in sealed environments like space stations. They placed plants inside small, sealed laboratory
chambers and found they were effective at removing harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like formaldehyde and benzene. The results were promising, and the idea of 'clean air plants' took root. However, the study's conditions—a small, airtight container—are fundamentally different from the average home or office, which has constant air exchange from drafts, windows, and ventilation systems.
A Numbers Game We Can't Win
Subsequent research has put the NASA findings into a real-world context, and the results are sobering. A 2019 meta-analysis reviewing decades of research concluded that plants clean air far too slowly to compete with a building's natural ventilation. To actually make a meaningful impact on your home's air quality, the numbers required are staggering. Researchers calculated you would need anywhere from 10 to 1,000 plants per square metre of floor space. To put that in perspective, a typical 1,500-square-foot home might need around 680 plants to achieve the air-cleaning effects seen in lab studies. In reality, opening a window or using a fan does a much faster and more effective job of diluting indoor pollutants.
What Actually Cleans Indoor Air?
If a jungle's worth of plants isn't the answer, what is? Experts point to a few key strategies that are proven to be effective. The first is source control: reducing pollutants at their origin by choosing low-VOC paints, furniture, and cleaning products. The second, and most effective, strategy is ventilation. Simply opening windows to allow for natural air exchange is one of the best ways to reduce the concentration of indoor pollutants. For those with allergies or in areas with poor outdoor air quality, mechanical air purifiers with HEPA filters are a powerful and reliable solution, hundreds of times more effective than houseplants for removing airborne particles and VOCs.

While they may not be the air-purifying superheroes we once thought, you shouldn't get rid of your green companions just yet.
