For water to turn from a liquid to a gas (evaporation), it needs energy, which it pulls from your skin in the form of heat. In dry heat, this system works beautifully, as sweat can evaporate quickly into the unsaturated air.
How Humidity Hijacks the System
Humidity is the amount of water vapour already present in the air. During the rainy season, relative humidity can soar to 80%, 90% or even higher. Think of the air as a sponge that is already nearly full of water. When this happens, there's very little room for more moisture, which means the sweat on your skin has nowhere to go. Evaporation slows to a crawl or stops altogether. Instead of efficiently cooling you down, the sweat just sits on your skin or drips off, leading to that sticky, clammy feeling. It’s a scientific calculation that combines air temperature and relative humidity to give a more accurate picture of the heat stress on the human body. For example, an actual air temperature of 33°C with 70% humidity can feel like 44°C to your body. This isn't just a psychological effect; it's a physiological reality because your cooling system has been compromised. The Heat Index is a crucial public health tool, as it helps forecast when conditions become not just uncomfortable, but dangerous.
More Than Discomfort: Real Health Risks
When your body can't release heat effectively, your core temperature can start to rise, putting significant strain on your cardiovascular system. Your heart has to work harder to pump more blood to the skin in a desperate attempt to cool down. This can lead to heat exhaustion, a serious condition with symptoms like heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, headache, and nausea. If heat exhaustion isn't treated by moving to a cooler place and rehydrating, it can escalate to heatstroke. Heatstroke is a life-threatening medical emergency where the body's temperature control system fails completely, leading to a core temperature of 40°C or higher, confusion, and even loss of consciousness.
How to Cope in Humid Heat
Managing heat in the rainy season is about more than just enduring it; it's about helping your body function under stress. Staying hydrated is paramount, as you are still losing fluids and electrolytes through sweat, even if it isn't evaporating. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothes made of breathable fabrics like cotton to allow for maximum air circulation. Avoid strenuous physical activity during the hottest and most humid parts of the day. If possible, seek refuge in air-conditioned spaces, which not only cool the air but also dehumidify it, allowing your body's cooling mechanism to work again. Pay close attention to the signs of heat exhaustion in yourself and others, especially children and the elderly, who are more vulnerable.
