A Perfect Storm of Demand
Europe is witnessing a record-breaking surge in visa applications from India. Following years of pent-up travel desire, rising disposable incomes and a growing interest in international tourism have converged, creating unprecedented demand. In 2025 alone,
Indian travellers submitted over 1.15 million applications, a number expected to be even higher this year. This boom means European embassies, consulates, and their visa application centres are facing immense pressure, with the volume of daily applications nearing pre-pandemic peak season levels.
The Appointment Bottleneck
The main issue isn't the visa processing time itself—which officially remains about 15 calendar days after your documents are submitted to the embassy—but securing the initial appointment to submit them. The peak travel season, running from April to July, has seen available slots for biometric appointments vanish almost as soon as they appear online. Wait times just to get an appointment can now stretch from three to eight weeks in major hubs like Delhi and Mumbai. This bottleneck is caused by a combination of limited appointment availability and a sharp increase in applicants, forcing many to either postpone their trips or seek alternative destinations.
Which Countries Are Most Affected?
While the entire Schengen Area is experiencing high volumes, some countries are more affected than others. Popular destinations like France and Italy are reportedly seeing wait times for appointments stretch from four to eight weeks for travel in July and August. In contrast, some reports suggest that countries like Germany and the Netherlands may have slightly faster turnaround times, though this can change rapidly. Travel experts note that approval rates can also vary between member states, but your application should always be made to your main destination or first port of entry.
Your New Planning Timeline: Think Months, Not Weeks
The days of planning a European summer trip in May are over. Travel agents and visa experts now unanimously advise a much longer planning horizon. To be safe, you should begin the visa process at least three to four months before your intended departure date. Most embassies allow you to apply up to six months in advance. For peak summer travel, this means looking for appointments as early as January or February. This buffer is crucial to navigate the appointment crunch and allow for the official processing period without jeopardizing your flight and hotel bookings.
Tips to Navigate the Visa Maze
While the situation is challenging, a successful application is still achievable with the right strategy. First, ensure your documentation is flawless; incomplete applications are a common reason for rejection, forcing you to start over. Check the VFS Global or other authorised visa centre portals frequently, as cancelled slots can be released at unexpected times, often early in the morning or late at night. Be meticulous with your travel insurance, ensuring it meets the minimum coverage of €30,000 and is valid for all Schengen countries for your entire stay. Finally, while it may be tempting, experts advise against applying to a less-crowded consulate if it is not your main destination, as this can lead to rejection.
