While these trains don’t make a scheduled stop right at the falls for passengers to get down, the journey itself offers breathtaking photo opportunities. The second and more practical approach is to take a train to the nearest access stations: Kulem in Goa or Castle Rock in Karnataka. Kulem is the most popular starting point for both the jeep safari and the trek to the base of the falls. You can reach Kulem via local passenger trains from Madgaon (Margao) in Goa.
Reaching the Falls: Jeep Safari vs Trekking
Once you alight at Kulem, you have two primary options to reach the falls. The most common method, especially post-monsoon, is the official jeep safari operated by the local union from Kulem. The bumpy one-hour ride takes you through the forest and across streams, dropping you a short walk from the base of the waterfall. This service is typically operational from October to May. For the more adventurous, a trek offers a more intimate experience with nature. The most popular route is the 11-12 km trek from Kulem, which follows a mix of forest paths and railway tracks. This trek is best suited for the post-monsoon months when the trail is safer. Permits from the Forest Department and hiring a guide are often mandatory, so it's essential to check the latest regulations before you go.
Budget Travel Tips for an Affordable Trip
A trip to Dudhsagar doesn't have to be expensive. One of the best ways to save money is by travelling in a group. The cost of a jeep safari, which is usually for the whole vehicle, can be split among several people, bringing the per-person cost down significantly. Another tip is to pack your own food and water. While there might be small shacks near Kulem, facilities inside the sanctuary are limited and can be pricey. Opting for train travel, especially unreserved general coaches to Kulem, is far more economical than hiring a private taxi for the entire journey from coastal Goa. Booking your long-distance trains to Goa or Karnataka well in advance also helps secure lower fares. Finally, while the view from the railway bridge is famous, Indian Railways has officially banned passengers from alighting at the unofficial Dudhsagar track stop due to safety concerns.
