Step 1: Create a Flawless Canvas
A long-lasting look begins with well-prepared skin. Start by cleansing your face to remove any dirt and oil, then apply a lightweight, hydrating moisturiser suitable for your skin type. Once moisturised, a primer is your best friend for Navratri. Opt
for a mattifying or gripping primer, especially on your T-zone, to control shine and help your makeup adhere better throughout the night. This crucial step ensures your base remains smooth and can withstand hours of dancing and celebration.
Step 2: Build a Sweat-Proof Base
Since Garba nights involve a lot of movement and potential sweating, a heavy foundation can feel uncomfortable and look cakey. Choose a lightweight, long-wear, and preferably oil-free foundation with a natural or soft-matte finish. Apply a thin layer using a damp sponge or brush, blending it out evenly. Instead of layering foundation, use a concealer to cover any blemishes or dark circles where needed. To lock it all in, lightly dust a translucent setting powder over areas that tend to get oily, like your forehead, nose, and chin. This prevents your base from melting away.
Step 3: Make Your Eyes the Centrepiece
Your eyes are the perfect feature to make a festive statement. To ensure your eyeshadow doesn't crease, start with an eyeshadow primer. For a standout look that’s easy to achieve, go for metallic or shimmer eyeshadows in shades of gold, bronze, or copper. Press the shimmer onto the centre of your eyelid with your finger for a more intense finish. Define your eyes with a waterproof and smudge-resistant kajal and eyeliner. A small wing can beautifully lift the eyes. Finish with a few coats of waterproof mascara to keep your lashes voluminous without the fear of smudging.
Step 4: Add a Festive Glow and Flush
Bring life and radiance to your face with blush and highlighter. A warm terracotta or rosy blush applied to the apples of your cheeks adds a healthy, natural flush. You can even layer a cream blush underneath a powder blush for extra staying power. To get that festive glow, apply a highlighter to the high points of your face—the top of your cheekbones, the bridge of your nose, and your brow bone. This will catch the light beautifully as you dance.
Step 5: Choose a Lipstick That Lasts
Your lip colour ties the whole look together. Given the long hours of festivities, which might include snacking and drinking, a long-lasting lipstick is a must. Liquid matte lipsticks are an excellent choice as they are largely transfer-proof and endure for hours. Vibrant shades like classic red, berry, or even a bold pink can complement a festive outfit perfectly. If you prefer a more balanced look with bold eyes, a warm nude or a peachy-brown shade also works beautifully. For extra longevity, line your lips before applying your lipstick.
Step 6: Lock in Your Look
The final and most critical step for a makeup look that needs to survive a night of Garba is a setting spray. After you've completed all the steps, hold the bottle at a distance and mist the setting spray all over your face. This creates a protective film over your makeup, ensuring everything stays in place from your first dandiya step to the last. Some makeup artists even recommend a 'spray sandwich' technique, where you spray before foundation and after, for maximum hold in humid conditions.
