AI and automation are rapidly taking over these functions. AI tools can now generate code, analyse data, and handle standard queries with increasing efficiency, making the skills that once guaranteed a job less valuable. This doesn't mean jobs are vanishing en masse, but it signals a fundamental change in the nature of work. The demand has shifted from professionals who perform routine tasks to those who can design, manage, and innovate with AI systems. This has led to a broader contraction in overall IT hiring, even as specific AI-native roles see significant growth.
The New Technical Must-Haves
To stay relevant, IT workers now need a toolkit stacked with AI-centric skills. Demand is surging for professionals who specialize in AI development, machine learning (ML), and data engineering. Specific high-demand roles include Machine Learning Engineer, which has the highest hiring volume, and Generative AI/LLM Developer, noted as the fastest-growing position. Expertise in areas like Natural Language Processing (NLP), computer vision, and the architecture of AI systems is also critical. According to recent job market analysis, skills related to Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and vector databases are frequently listed in job descriptions, highlighting a move towards applied, production-ready AI. Cloud computing and cybersecurity skills remain crucial, but now with an added layer of AI integration.
Beyond the Code: The Power of Human-Centred Skills
Perhaps the most significant change is the rising premium on human-centric skills that AI cannot replicate. As AI handles the 'how,' the value of human workers shifts to the 'why' and 'what next.' Skills like critical thinking, creative problem-solving, adaptability, and emotional intelligence are becoming key differentiators. Employers are increasingly looking for professionals who can understand a business problem deeply, collaborate across teams, and use their judgment to guide AI tools effectively. A recent Nasscom report highlighted that a major challenge for employers is a mismatch in these foundational, human-centred capabilities, not just technical AI skills. Tech professionals who combine technical expertise with strong communication and leadership skills are promoted faster and are better positioned for success.
The Upskilling Imperative
This transformation has made continuous learning a non-negotiable aspect of an IT career. Companies and employees alike recognise the urgent need to upskill and reskill. Major IT firms are rolling out extensive internal training programs and encouraging certifications in the latest AI technologies. The focus is on a mix of upskilling—enhancing existing skills to work alongside AI—and reskilling, which involves training for entirely new roles. There's also a growing trend towards skills-based hiring, where demonstrable abilities and certifications can outweigh a traditional degree. However, industry body Nasscom has cautioned that as AI automates routine tasks, there's a risk of creating an 'AI-reliant' workforce that lacks deep engineering expertise. Therefore, the goal is not just to learn how to use AI tools, but to develop the fundamental judgment that comes from hands-on experience.
