Why Electoral Rolls Are Updated
The Election Commission of India (ECI) periodically conducts exercises like the Special Summary Revision (SSR) to keep the country's electoral rolls accurate and up-to-date. This isn't just a routine task; it's a cornerstone of a healthy democracy. The primary
goals are to add newly eligible citizens who have turned 18, remove names of those who are deceased or have permanently shifted their residence, and correct any errors in existing entries. These revisions ensure that the voter list is a pure, transparent, and inclusive record of all eligible voters, which is the foundation of every credible election. The current exercise across 17 states, including poll-bound ones like Uttar Pradesh and Punjab, is part of this vital process to prepare for upcoming elections with the most accurate voter data possible.
What You Need Before You Start
Before you begin, having the right information on hand will make the process much smoother. If you have recently applied for a new voter ID (using Form 6), for a correction (Form 8), or for deletion (Form 7), you should have received a Reference ID. This unique alphanumeric code is your key to tracking the application's progress. It's typically sent via SMS to your registered mobile number and is also on the acknowledgement receipt you receive upon submission. If you are not tracking a new application but simply want to confirm if your name is correctly listed on the electoral roll, you can do so using your personal details (name, father's name, state, etc.) or your EPIC (Elector's Photo Identity Card) number. Having your EPIC number handy is always a good idea for any voter-related service.
Tracking via the Voters' Service Portal
The ECI's official Voters' Service Portal (voters.eci.gov.in) is the primary destination for all online voter services. To track your application, navigate to the portal's homepage. Look for a service labelled 'Track Application Status'. Clicking this will take you to a page where you'll be prompted to enter your Reference ID and select your state from a dropdown menu. Once you submit this information, the portal will display the current stage of your application. The status is typically shown in a clear, four-step pipeline: 'Submitted', 'BLO Appointed', 'Field Verified', and finally, 'Accepted' or 'Rejected'. If your application is accepted, your new EPIC number will be generated and displayed there.
Using the Voter Helpline App
For those who prefer using their smartphones, the ECI’s official 'Voter Helpline' app is an excellent alternative. Available on both Android and iOS, the app provides a comprehensive suite of services, including application tracking. After downloading and registering on the app with your mobile number, you can access the 'Track Status of your application' feature. Much like the web portal, you will need to enter your Reference ID to see the progress of your form. The app also allows you to search your name in the electoral roll, download a digital version of your voter card (e-EPIC), and even find contact details for your local Booth Level Officer (BLO) and Electoral Registration Officer (ERO).
What If You Can't Find Your Name?
If you check the electoral roll and find your name is missing, or if your application status is 'Rejected', don't panic. There are clear steps to take. If your application was rejected, the reason is usually provided. It could be due to a simple error in the form or the need for additional documentation. You can re-apply, ensuring all details are correct. If you find your name is simply not on the list despite being registered earlier, you should submit Form 6 to apply for a new registration. For any confusion, the best course of action is to contact your area's BLO. Their contact information can be found on the ECI portal or the Voter Helpline app. You can also call the national voter helpline at 1950 for assistance.
