Secure Your Luggage Like a Pro
Your first line of defense is physically securing your bags. Most experienced travelers swear by the classic chain and padlock method. Indian trains, especially in sleeper and AC coaches, have metal loops or rings under the lower berths designed for this
purpose. Purchase a sturdy steel chain and a reliable lock before your trip. Loop it through your luggage handles and fasten it to the fixed ring. This simple step makes it nearly impossible for someone to quickly walk away with your bag. For added security, consider using hard-sided luggage, which is more resistant to being cut open, and use smaller locks on your bag’s zippers as a further deterrent.
Keep Your Valuables on Your Person
Your most critical items—passport, phone, wallet, and any medications—should never be in your main stowed luggage. Keep them in a small daypack or crossbody bag that stays with you at all times. When you sleep, this small bag can be used as a pillow or kept near your head, especially if you have an upper berth. An anti-theft bag with features like slash-resistant fabric and RFID-blocking pockets offers another layer of protection against both physical theft and digital skimming.
Choose Your Berth Wisely
When booking your ticket, aim for the upper berth if possible. It offers more privacy and security, as you are out of the general foot traffic of the carriage. It's harder for anyone to access your belongings, and you can stretch out without being disturbed. For solo female travelers, Indian Railways reserves some berths for women in most long-distance trains, which can be a reassuring option to look for during booking.
Pack for Comfort and a Good Night's Sleep
While AC coaches can get quite cold, non-AC sleeper class can be stuffy. Packing light, layered clothing is key. A lightweight blanket or shawl is a must-have for chilly AC compartments. To block out the inevitable noise and light from stations and fellow passengers, an eye mask and earplugs are invaluable. An inflatable travel pillow will also significantly improve your comfort and help you get some rest.
Stay Healthy with Smart Food and Water Choices
While the chai and snacks sold at stations are part of the experience, it’s wise to be cautious. Stick to packaged snacks and bottled water from official vendors. To be extra safe, pack your own food for at least the first part of your journey. Dry fruits, nuts, and energy bars are great options. Always carry a reusable water bottle that you can refill from a trusted source. For hygiene, a pack of wet wipes and hand sanitizer are non-negotiable for freshening up and cleaning your hands before eating.
Be Situationally Aware
Engaging in friendly conversation with fellow travelers is a highlight of train travel, but be cautious about sharing too much personal information. Don't accept food from strangers and keep an eye on your surroundings, especially when the train stops at stations. For solo female travelers, avoiding prolonged eye contact can prevent unwanted attention. Trust your instincts; if a situation feels uncomfortable, move away. Knowing the railway helpline number (139) and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) helpline (182) can provide peace of mind.
