The long-awaited Goa plan for Bengaluru residents just received a major boost. The Indian Railway Board has approved a new Vande Bharat Express, slashing travel time and promising a comfortable, scenic journey to India’s favourite coastal destination.
A Vande Bharat for the Sunshine State
The Railway Board has officially sanctioned a new Vande Bharat Express service connecting Yesvantpur in Bengaluru with Madgaon in Goa. This move is set to significantly enhance rail connectivity between Karnataka's tech capital and the popular tourist hub. The new service, operating under train numbers 26655/26656, will function as a modern chair car train, running six days a week. While an official launch date is awaited, reports suggest the service could commence as early as the third week of November 2026. This development follows the crucial completion of electrification work on the Bengaluru-Mangaluru railway line, which has paved the way for faster and more efficient train operations along this scenic corridor.
The New Schedule Explained
The approved timetable promises a journey time of around 13 hours, a marked improvement for rail travellers on this route. Train No. 26655 is scheduled to depart from Yesvantpur at 7:35 AM and arrive in Madgaon at 8:55 PM the same day, taking a total of 13 hours and 20 minutes. This service will run every day except for Wednesday. For the return journey, Train No. 26656 will leave Madgaon at 8:20 AM and reach Yesvantpur at 9:15 PM, completing the trip in a slightly quicker 12 hours and 55 minutes. The return service will not operate on Thursdays. This daytime schedule allows passengers to soak in the views, arriving in Goa just in time for a late dinner.
A Scenic Journey Through the Ghats
One of the most appealing aspects of this new service is its route. The train will travel via Mangaluru Junction, traversing the stunning Western Ghats. The stretch between Sakleshpur and Subrahmanya Road is particularly renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, featuring lush green hills, winding tracks, and verdant forests, promising to make the journey itself a memorable part of the holiday. The train will also provide enhanced connectivity to several key towns in coastal Karnataka. With 12 intermediate stops planned, the service will halt at stations including Hassan, Sakleshpur, Mangaluru Junction, Udupi, Murdeshwar, and Karwar, before reaching Madgaon.
How It Compares to Other Options
Until now, train travel between Bengaluru and Goa could take anywhere from 14 to over 15 hours. For example, the daily Yesvantpur Vasco da Gama Express (17309) often takes around 13 hours and 40 minutes or more, typically involving an overnight journey. The new Vande Bharat, with its sub-$13$-hour return leg, offers a faster and more modern alternative. Compared to road travel, which can take $12$-$14$ hours and is subject to traffic and road conditions, the train provides a more predictable and relaxing option. While flights are the fastest method, they often come at a premium price and involve the additional time and hassle of airport procedures. The Vande Bharat aims to strike a balance, offering a comfortable, cost-$effective$, and scenic alternative to both buses and planes.
Booking and What to Expect
While the fares for the new Vande Bharat service are yet to be announced, they are expected to be competitive with other premium train services. Bookings will be available through the IRCTC website and mobile app once the service is officially launched. As a premium Vande Bharat service, passengers can expect modern amenities, including comfortable seating, clean coaches, and onboard catering options. The introduction of this train also means the discontinuation of the existing Madgaon$-$Mangaluru Central Vande Bharat Express, as this new route effectively extends and replaces that service. Travellers are advised to book their tickets well in advance, especially for travel during long weekends and festive seasons, as this route is expected to be highly popular.
