Mental Health is the Main Goal
For younger generations, the primary objective of a wellness trip is to recharge mentally and emotionally. A staggering 93% of travellers aged 18 to 25 agree that travel has a positive impact on their mental health. This isn't about escaping life, but
about finding tools to manage it better. As a result, retreats are moving beyond surface-level pampering to offer experiences with more emotional depth, such as guided journaling, mindfulness workshops, and therapy-informed programmes. The goal is to return from a break not just rested, but more resilient.
Active Rest is the New Relaxation
Passive lounging by a pool is being replaced by active and adventurous pursuits. Gen Z travellers often prefer wellness itineraries that include physical challenges and new experiences. Think guided mountain hikes, paddle boarding, kayaking, or even cold plunges, which are gaining popularity for their benefits in reducing stress and increasing mental sharpness. This approach combines the physical benefits of exercise with the mental uplift of being in nature and learning a new skill. The focus is on holistic healing that addresses the body, mind, and spirit together.
Authenticity Over Everything
This generation craves genuine connection and authentic experiences over performative luxury. Wellness breaks are becoming more about cultural immersion, engaging with local communities, and forming bonds with fellow travellers. There is a growing demand for small-group travel and stays at eco-friendly lodges that prioritise sustainability. This extends to 'dry vacations', with a significant number of young travellers—as high as 80% in one survey—open to alcohol-free holidays that focus on clear-headed presence and meaningful engagement.
The Digital Detox with a Twist
While growing up hyper-connected has led to digital burnout, the Gen Z approach to a detox is nuanced. Many wellness retreats now cater specifically to this need, offering tech-free environments to help guests disconnect from the constant buzz of notifications and social media. This encourages a slower pace of life and being present. However, the paradox is that these travellers still use platforms like TikTok and Instagram for travel inspiration. The perfect Gen Z-friendly retreat, therefore, offers a genuine chance to unplug while also providing beautiful, shareable moments.
Wellness on a Budget
Perhaps the most significant shift is the move toward more affordable and accessible wellness. While luxury wellness remains a strong market, there's a booming demand for budget-friendly options that don't require a massive investment of time or money. Shorter, more frequent getaways are becoming popular. In India, the wellness tourism market is expanding rapidly, driven by the country's rich traditions in yoga, Ayurveda, and meditation, which are often available at a more accessible price point compared to Western countries. This democratisation of wellness is making it a viable option for a much wider audience.
