The Monsoon's Gradual Goodbye
The Southwest Monsoon, which brings crucial rainfall across India from roughly June to September, doesn't just switch off. Its withdrawal is a gradual process that typically begins in the northwestern parts of the country around the first week of September and
proceeds southeastward over the following weeks. This period of transition, lasting through September and October, is what sets the stage for a noticeable change in weather. The low-pressure systems that drive the monsoon weaken, and the moisture-laden winds begin to recede, marking the end of the main rainy season for much of the subcontinent.
Clear Skies and Returning Heat
One of the primary reasons for the spike in temperature is the return of clear skies. During the peak monsoon months, extensive cloud cover acts like a natural sunshade, blocking a significant amount of direct solar radiation and keeping daytime temperatures moderate. As the monsoon retreats, the clouds dissipate. This allows for intense and direct sunshine to heat the land and the air, causing daytime temperatures to climb back towards summer-like levels. Even though the sun's position in the sky is lower than in May or June, the lack of cloud interference leads to a sharp increase in perceived heat.
The Humidity Factor
What makes this post-monsoon heat particularly uncomfortable is not just the temperature but the high humidity. The preceding months of rain leave behind a great deal of moisture in the soil and the lower atmosphere. When the sun comes out and temperatures rise, this moisture evaporates, leading to exceptionally muggy conditions. This combination of high heat and high humidity is far more oppressive than the dry heat of pre-monsoon summer. The humidity hampers the body's natural cooling mechanism—sweating—because the air is already saturated with moisture, preventing sweat from evaporating effectively. This can make the 'feels like' temperature, or heat index, significantly higher than what the thermometer reads.
What to Expect in September 2026
For September 2026, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that rainfall across the country is likely to be below normal. This forecast is influenced by strong El Niño conditions, which are often associated with weaker monsoon rainfall in India and are expected to intensify. A drier-than-usual September could mean more clear-sky days, potentially leading to increased daytime temperatures across many regions. The IMD has noted that the withdrawal of the monsoon may be on time, around September 17th. However, subdued rainfall is expected to continue over Peninsular India in early September, while parts of central and eastern India may still see significant rain due to low-pressure systems.
Is This the 'October Heat' Arriving Early?
This weather pattern is famously known as the 'October Heat', a term used to describe the oppressive combination of warmth and humidity that follows the monsoon's withdrawal. While the name points to October, the phenomenon often begins in September, coinciding with the timing of the monsoon's retreat from different regions. As the climate changes, patterns of heat and humidity are shifting, and many areas are experiencing more frequent and intense periods of humid heat. This post-monsoon heat poses challenges to agriculture and public health, underscoring the need to understand these transitional weather periods.
