The Silent Drain of Subscription Creep
In India's fast-growing digital market, subscribing to services is easier than ever. With just a few taps, you can get access to movies, music, news, productivity tools, and more. The convenience of UPI AutoPay and card-based recurring payments means
you set it once and forget it. But this very convenience is a double-edged sword. It creates a financial blind spot where forgotten free trials convert to paid plans and services you no longer use continue to charge your account month after month. The average user in India often juggles multiple subscriptions, from Netflix and Spotify to Google One and various SaaS tools. This phenomenon, known as 'subscription creep', can lead to hundreds or even thousands of rupees being spent unintentionally every year.
Your Three-Step Subscription Audit
Finding every recurring payment can feel like a detective mission, but a systematic approach makes it manageable. Start by reviewing your bank and credit card statements from the last few months. Look for repeating merchant names and amounts, which are tell-tale signs of a subscription. Next, dive into the digital storefronts on your phone. For Android users, open the Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, and go to 'Payments & subscriptions' to see a list of all active subscriptions tied to your account. For iPhone users, open the 'Settings' app, tap your name, and then select 'Subscriptions' to find your list. Finally, don't forget to check UPI apps like Google Pay or PhonePe, which have an 'AutoPay' or 'Mandates' section listing your recurring UPI-based payments.
How to Cancel Unwanted Subscriptions
Once you've identified a subscription to cancel, the process is usually straightforward. For app-based subscriptions, the cancellation is done through the same store where you found them. In the Google Play Store or Apple's App Store, simply select the subscription and tap 'Cancel Subscription'. For services billed directly through their own website (like Netflix), you'll need to log into your account on their platform and find the billing or account settings to cancel. If you encounter issues, the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) e-mandate framework provides some protection. It requires merchants to send a notification at least 24 hours before a debit, which must include information on how to cancel. You can also contact your bank directly to revoke a standing instruction or e-mandate for a specific merchant.
Staying Ahead: Tools and Habits
After your initial clean-up, the key is to stay organised to prevent future clutter. One effective habit is to conduct a subscription review every three to six months. Set a recurring calendar reminder to prompt yourself. For an even more streamlined approach, consider using a dedicated subscription tracker app. Several apps available in India are designed to centralise all your recurring payments, provide renewal reminders, and even offer insights into your spending habits. Some people prefer a simple spreadsheet to manually list each subscription, its cost, and renewal date. This manual method forces you to be more intentional and aware of where your money is going. Whichever method you choose, the goal is to create a system that gives you a clear and current view of all your recurring financial commitments.
