A quantum computer is like a dimmer switch, able to exist in countless states in between. For finance, an industry built on complex calculations, this capability is a game-changer, promising to solve problems that are currently impossible for even the most powerful supercomputers.
The Double-Edged Sword of Security
One of the most urgent topics at GFF 2026 is quantum's dual role in cybersecurity. On one hand, a powerful quantum computer could theoretically break the encryption that protects most of the world's financial data today—from bank accounts to payment networks. This has led to the concept of 'harvest now, decrypt later,' where malicious actors could be stealing encrypted data today, waiting for the day a quantum computer can crack it open. On the other hand, quantum technology itself offers the solution: quantum-safe cryptography. Sessions at the Fest are examining how India's financial institutions can migrate to these new security standards to build a more resilient financial infrastructure for the future.
Reimagining Risk and Trading
Beyond security, quantum computing offers incredible offensive capabilities for finance. Take risk management, a cornerstone of the banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) sector. Quantum systems could run complex simulations with millions of variables in near real-time, providing a much clearer picture of market risks or credit defaults. This could revolutionize everything from insurance underwriting to fraud detection, an area where financial crime losses are immense. Similarly, in investment, quantum algorithms could optimize trading strategies and manage portfolios by analyzing countless possibilities simultaneously, a task far beyond the reach of classical computers.
India's National Push
This exploration isn't happening in a vacuum. India is making a concerted effort to become a global leader in this deep-tech field. The government's National Quantum Mission (NQM), approved in 2023 with a budget of over Rs. 6,000 crore, aims to scale up research, development, and a vibrant startup ecosystem in the country. The mission's goals are ambitious, including developing intermediate-scale quantum computers and building a secure quantum communication network across thousands of kilometers. This national backing, combined with early explorations by institutions like the Reserve Bank of India, provides a strong foundation for the fintech industry's quantum ambitions.
