Daylight, Darkness, and Your Body Clock
One of the most significant ways the rainy season affects us is through the reduction in natural sunlight. Your body’s internal 24-hour clock, or circadian rhythm, is primarily regulated by the light-dark cycle. Exposure to sunlight, especially in the morning,
signals your brain to be alert and suppresses the production of melatonin, the hormone that makes you feel sleepy. During the monsoon, persistent grey skies and fewer hours of bright daylight can confuse this internal clock. Your body may produce more melatonin during the day, leading to that familiar feeling of drowsiness and low energy. Conversely, this can disrupt your natural sleep pressure at night, making it harder to fall into a deep, restful slumber when you’re supposed to.
The Humidity and Temperature Puzzle
High humidity is a hallmark of the Indian monsoon, and it plays a surprisingly big role in sleep quality. For optimal sleep, your body's core temperature needs to drop slightly. However, when the air is thick with moisture, sweat doesn't evaporate from your skin as efficiently, which is a key way the body cools itself down. This can leave you feeling sticky and uncomfortable, making it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep. Studies have shown that sleeping in hot, humid conditions can result in more time spent awake and less of the restorative deep and REM sleep stages. This struggle to regulate body temperature can lead to a night of tossing and turning, even if the ambient temperature isn't excessively high.
The Comfort Food Conundrum
What’s a rainy day without a plate of hot pakoras and a cup of masala chai? While these comfort foods are an integral part of the monsoon experience, they might be contributing to your sleep woes. Heavy, fried, and fatty foods take longer for your stomach to digest, which can cause indigestion and discomfort when you lie down. Eating spicy foods too close to bedtime can also interfere with your body's ability to cool down for sleep. Furthermore, sugary treats can cause your blood sugar to spike and then crash, which may disrupt your sleep cycle. Even seemingly harmless cups of tea or coffee contain caffeine, a stimulant that can make it difficult to get the deep sleep you need if consumed late in the day.
The Indoor Inertia Effect
When it's pouring outside, the temptation to stay curled up on the sofa is strong. This reduction in physical activity, however, can have a direct impact on your sleep. Regular exercise helps regulate your circadian rhythm, reduces stress, and builds up sleep pressure, making you feel naturally tired at the end of the day. When you're less active, your body doesn't get these same signals. A lack of movement can lead to feelings of lethargy or 'cabin fever', which paradoxically can make it harder to sleep well at night. Consistent physical activity, even gentle indoor workouts or a walk during a break in the rain, can significantly improve sleep quality and boost your overall energy levels.
Sounds and Atmospheric Pressure
The constant patter of rain can be a soothing form of 'pink noise' for many, helping to mask other disruptive sounds and promote relaxation. However, for others, loud thunder and strong winds can create anxiety and interrupt sleep. Beyond sound, some individuals are sensitive to changes in barometric pressure, which drops before and during a storm. These drops in atmospheric pressure have been linked to an increase in joint pain or headaches for some, making it difficult to get comfortable and fall asleep.
