A Multi-Crore Infrastructure Boost
On September 8, 2026, a significant push was given to Gujarat's infrastructure with the launch of new projects valued at over ₹35,000 crore. This massive investment focuses on enhancing the state's rail and road networks, aiming to improve both passenger
travel and freight movement. The initiatives are designed to create a more integrated and efficient transport system, connecting industrial hubs, ports, and cities more effectively than ever before. The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor
A cornerstone of the recent announcements is the inauguration of the final three sections of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC), making the entire route fully operational. This project, with a price tag of over ₹20,700 crore, is a game-changer for logistics. The newly operational sections provide a direct rail link from industrial zones like Sanand to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) near Mumbai. For businesses, this means faster movement of import and export cargo, a significant reduction in logistics costs, and less congestion on the busy Mumbai rail network, ultimately boosting India's trade competitiveness.
Upgrading the Railway Network
Beyond freight, passenger rail is also receiving a major upgrade with new projects worth over ₹9,700 crore. Key initiatives include laying third and fourth railway lines between Vadodara and Ratlam, doubling the track on the Vishwamitri-Dabhoi section, and converting the Miyagam Karjan-Choranda-Malsar line to broad gauge. These projects are crucial for increasing the capacity of the rail network, allowing more trains to run and reducing delays. Additionally, a new passenger train service between Vadodara and Tanda Road was launched, connecting tribal areas of Alirajpur to the national network and improving mobility for thousands.
Gujarat's Vande Bharat Expansion
The state's premium train connectivity is also expanding. In early September 2026, the Railway Board approved Gujarat's sixth Vande Bharat Express, a new service connecting Surat with Udaipur in Rajasthan. This is a significant development for Surat, the diamond and textile hub, which gets its first Vande Bharat train. The service, expected to start before Navratri, will cut the travel time between the two cities to just 7 hours and 30 minutes, boosting both business travel and tourism. This new route replaces the former Udaipur-Asarwa (Ahmedabad) service, extending the high-speed connection deeper into South Gujarat.
Smoother, Safer Roads Ahead
The state's road network is being enhanced with projects worth approximately ₹1,780 crore. This includes the six-laning of the busy Kamrej-Chalthan section of National Highway 48 and the construction of vital new bridges over the Narmada and Tapi rivers on the Vadodara-Surat section. To improve road safety, grade-separated structures and flyovers are being built at major junctions and accident-prone spots.
