When choosing an airport, travellers often focus on one thing: the price of the flight. However, the 'total journey cost' is a much more accurate measure. This concept includes not just the airfare but every expense incurred from the moment you leave
your home until you reach the airport terminal. This includes taxi or cab fares, fuel and toll costs for personal vehicles, metro or bus tickets, and even the monetary value of your time spent travelling. For the newly operational Noida International Airport (DXN), located in Jewar, understanding this total cost is essential for making a smart travel decision, especially when comparing it with Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI).
The Ground Cost: Reaching the Airport
The biggest variable in your total journey cost is getting to the airport. For those living in Noida, Greater Noida, and parts of East Delhi, Jewar might be geographically closer than IGI. For example, a drive from Noida Sector 18 to Jewar is about 45 minutes, whereas reaching IGI can take 60 minutes or more. However, for residents of Gurugram, South Delhi, or West Delhi, IGI remains significantly more convenient. A trip from Gurugram to IGI might take 25 minutes, while the journey to Jewar could stretch to over 90 minutes. These time differences translate directly into costs. Cab fares from Central Delhi to Jewar are estimated to be between ₹1,800-₹2,400, while a similar trip to IGI is much lower. From Noida Sector 18, cab fares to Jewar are in the ₹1,000-₹1,200 range. If driving your own car, you must also factor in toll charges on the Yamuna Expressway, which are around ₹450 one-way from Delhi.
The Airfare Question
Initially, it was hoped that lower taxes on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) in Uttar Pradesh would lead to significantly cheaper flights from Noida Airport. While this provides an advantage, it is largely offset by higher charges at the new airport. The User Development Fee (UDF) at Noida is notably higher than at IGI. A domestic passenger departing from Noida pays a UDF of ₹490, compared to just ₹129 at Delhi. For a family of four, this adds over ₹1,400 to the total cost before even considering the base fare. While airlines have introduced competitive introductory fares to attract passengers, the underlying cost structure means that assuming flights from Noida will always be cheaper is a mistake.
The Value of Time and Convenience
Time is an unstated cost. A longer commute to the airport, even if cheaper, means less time for work or family. For business travellers, this time has a direct monetary value. Public transport options also play a crucial role. IGI airport is well-connected by the Airport Express Metro, offering a fast and affordable option. While bus services to Noida Airport have been initiated and a Metro line is planned, the ground transport network is still evolving. In its initial phase, passengers with luggage, those travelling at odd hours, or families may find cabs or private cars to be the only practical, albeit more expensive, options. The convenience of a well-established transport system at IGI cannot be overlooked.

So, how do you decide? Before booking your next flight, create a simple checklist for both airports: 1. Airfare + Fees: Compare the final ticket price, including the higher UDF for Noida. 2. Ground Travel Cost: Estimate the round-trip cab fare or fuel/toll costs from your home to both airports. 3. Ground Travel Time: How much time will you spend on the road for each option, considering traffic? 4. Public Transport: Is there a viable bus or metro option available for your travel time and luggage needs? 5. Your Location: The choice is clearest for those at the extremes. If you live in Greater Noida or along the Yamuna Expressway, Jewar is likely your best bet. If you reside in Gurugram or Dwarka, IGI will almost certainly be more convenient. For everyone in between, the calculation is more nuanced.
