The Great Divide: Kapoors vs. Pataudis
Kareena Kapoor Khan, never one to mince words, recently highlighted a fundamental difference between her family, the Kapoors, and her husband Saif Ali Khan's family, the Pataudis. On a recent talk show, she pointed to Saif and shared that his favourite
vegetable is lauki (bottle gourd). She explained that the entire Pataudi clan, including Sharmila Tagore and Soha Ali Khan, regularly enjoys the simple vegetable. In stark contrast, she declared, 'Hum paaya khaane wale hai yaar (we are people who eat mutton trotters)'. This playful observation sets the stage for her own culinary world, one that joyfully makes room for both the disciplined and the decadent.
A Lifelong Love for Pizza
Kareena’s affection for pizza is well-documented and a core part of her unapologetic foodie persona. She has openly admitted to being a 'pizza-guzzling girl', especially during her pregnancies, where she would famously 'demolish one pizza after another' to the amazement of her friends. This love for indulgence isn't just a pregnancy craving; it's a consistent theme. She has participated in celebrity cooking shows where she learned to make gourmet pizzas from scratch and has frequently shared her love for everything from a classic pepperoni to more artisanal creations. For Kareena, pizza represents joy, comfort, and the freedom to enjoy life without being overly restrictive.
The Gospel of 'Ghar Ka Khaana'
Counterbalancing the pizza is a deep, abiding respect for traditional Indian home-cooked food, or 'ghar ka khaana'. For over a decade, guided by her nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar, Kareena has championed the philosophy of eating simple, seasonal, and local meals. Her diet is famously rooted in staples like khichdi, dal-chawal, sabzi-roti, and ghee. She has often stated she needs her khichdi a few times a week to sleep well, calling it her ultimate comfort food. This isn't about deprivation but about nourishment. Her daily routine includes basics like poha or idli for breakfast and a balanced plate of vegetables, dal, and roti for lunch. This philosophy demonstrates that sustainable fitness for her isn't about exotic superfoods but about embracing the wisdom of the Indian kitchen.
Raising Taimur and Jeh at the Dinner Table
This duality of pizza and lauki naturally extends to her children, Taimur and Jeh. Kareena has described herself as a 'hyper_paranoid' mother when it comes to her kids' diets, ensuring they eat healthy, home_cooked food. Taimur’s meal plans are thoughtfully curated monthly to include seasonal fruits and vegetables. His plate often features khichdi, idli, dosa, and even saag, which she admitted to 'shoving down his throat' until he acquired a taste for it. However, she also acknowledges the need for balance, recognizing that forbidding treats at birthday parties might be wrong. More than just the food itself, mealtime in the Khan household is about togetherness. In a telling anecdote, Kareena shared that after Taimur questioned why his nanny sat separately to eat, it became a 'rule of the house' for everyone to eat together at the same table, teaching her sons a valuable lesson in equality and respect.
