Planning an overnight train journey? You’ll need to manage your device’s battery life carefully. Indian Railways is strictly enforcing a rule to switch off all charging points in coaches from 11 PM to 5 AM, and it’s not just for convenience.
What is the Night Charging Protocol?
Indian Railways
has mandated that all mobile and laptop charging sockets in train coaches must be switched off for a six-hour period every night, from 11 PM to 5 AM. This is not a new rule, but a strict reinforcement of a directive that has been in place for several years. The Railway Board recently issued instructions to all zonal railways to ensure this protocol is followed without exception. To ensure compliance, officials and supervisors will be conducting surprise inspections. This means that passengers will be unable to charge their electronic devices using the train's power sockets during these hours.
The Primary Reason: Preventing Fires
The core motivation behind this rule is fire safety. The directive was first introduced in 2014 after a recommendation from the Commissioner of Railway Safety following a fire incident on the Bengaluru-Hazur Sahib Nanded Express in 2013. Concerns about faulty electronics, overheating batteries, and short circuits from devices left charging unattended overnight were identified as significant fire risks. The issue has been revisited multiple times, including after a fire in a sleeper coach in November 2023 and, most recently, an incident in October 2026 where a passenger's power bank exploded while charging on the Mumbai-Howrah Mail, filling a coach with smoke. The Railway Board noted that in this recent case, the onboard staff had failed to switch off the power sockets as required, prompting the renewed enforcement push.
Is the Rule for All Coaches?
The instruction to switch off power sockets applies to all coaches across all zonal railways. The original 2014 directive focused primarily on air-conditioned (AC) coaches, with railways advised to place stickers to inform passengers. However, subsequent incidents and safety reviews have broadened the scope. After a fire in a non-AC sleeper coach in 2023, the Commissioner of Railway Safety recommended extending the shutdown to these coaches as well. While there were initial discussions about the feasibility of deploying staff to manage this in non-AC coaches, the latest directive from the Railway Board on October 26, 2026, instructs all zones to implement the rule universally to prevent any fire hazards.
More Than Just Fire Safety
While preventing fires is the main goal, the rule has other benefits. It helps maintain a peaceful environment in the coach after 10 PM, a period when passengers are expected to lower their voices and dim the lights. The 'lights out' approach also discourages disputes over limited charging points late at night. Furthermore, some railway zones have noted that the protocol can help reduce the theft of mobile phones and other devices, as passengers are discouraged from leaving them unattended to charge overnight.
How Passengers Can Prepare
For travellers on overnight journeys, this rule requires a bit of planning. The most straightforward solution is to ensure all your electronic devices—phones, laptops, and tablets—are fully charged before you board the train or before the 11 PM cutoff. Carrying a fully charged power bank is another essential tip for anyone who anticipates needing to recharge their device during the night. It's also wise to turn on battery-saving modes on your devices to extend their life. Remember, you can still use your devices during the night; the restriction only applies to charging them via the train's sockets.
