Conquering the World Stage
Mbappé announced his arrival on the global stage at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. At just 19, he became the youngest French goalscorer in World Cup history. But he didn't stop there. By scoring in the final against Croatia, he became only the second teenager,
after the legendary Pelé in 1958, to score in a World Cup final. His two goals against Argentina in the round of 16 also made him the first teen since Pelé to score a brace in a knockout match. By the end of the 2022 tournament in Qatar, where he won the Golden Boot, he had already scored 12 World Cup goals, the most by any player before their 24th birthday.
A Champions League Prodigy
Europe's elite club competition became a playground for the young Mbappé. He burst onto the scene with Monaco in 2016-17, and by December 2017, at age 18, he became the youngest player to reach 10 goals in the competition. He continued to smash records at Paris Saint-Germain. In December 2021, at just 22 years old, he became the youngest player in history to score 30 goals in the Champions League. While Erling Haaland would later break some of his 'youngest to score' records, Mbappé's consistency at such a young age set a new benchmark for forwards in the modern era.
The Undisputed King of Paris
After moving to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017 for a staggering €180 million, making him the world's most expensive teenager, the pressure was immense. Mbappé thrived. In December 2021, he became the youngest player to score 100 goals for a single top-flight French club since data collection began in the 1950s. Before his 25th birthday, he had already surpassed Edinson Cavani to become PSG's all-time leading goalscorer, a monumental achievement considering the club's history of prolific strikers. His impact was immediate and historic, cementing his legacy in the French capital long before his prime.
Dominating the French League
From his early days at Monaco, Mbappé was a record-setter in Ligue 1. He became Monaco's youngest-ever first-team player and, later, their youngest goalscorer, breaking records previously held by Thierry Henry. His prolific scoring continued at an unprecedented rate. In the 2018-19 season, at just 20 years old, he scored over 30 goals, becoming the youngest player ever to achieve that feat in a French top-flight season. Just before turning 21, he also became the youngest player in the last 50 years to score 70 goals in Ligue 1, smashing the previous record by nearly two years.
A Generational Goal Scorer
When you zoom out and look at the sheer volume of goals, the numbers are staggering. By the time he blew out 25 candles, Mbappé had scored over 300 goals for club and country. To put that in perspective, at the same age, Lionel Messi had scored 279 goals, and Cristiano Ronaldo had 170. While both went on to accelerate their scoring to otherworldly levels, Mbappé's starting pace was simply faster. He reached 100 career goals in June 2019, still a teenager, a testament to his incredible consistency and finishing ability from the very beginning of his professional career.
