From Pet Ownership to Pet Parenting
A profound cultural shift is reshaping India’s relationship with its pets. The trend, known as ‘pet humanization’, sees a growing number of owners viewing their animals not just as pets, but as integral members of the family, akin to children. This emotional
evolution is driving a massive surge in demand for products and services that go far beyond basic necessities. Pet parents now seek out high-quality, nutritious food, including grain-free and organic options. The market for accessories, grooming, and wellness products is also exploding, with everything from designer apparel and spa treatments to pet-friendly ice cream becoming increasingly common. This change is particularly pronounced among millennial and Gen Z owners, who are often first-time pet parents and are more willing to spend on premium care to ensure the health and happiness of their furry companions.
The Boom Beyond the Metros
For years, the pet care ecosystem was heavily concentrated in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. However, the real story of the industry's growth is now unfolding in India’s Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. These emerging markets are experiencing incredible year-on-year growth in pet care orders, significantly outpacing the metros. A report based on Swiggy Instamart's data highlighted that smaller cities posted a staggering 96% growth in this sector, with places like Guwahati, Meerut, Madurai, and Kottayam leading the charge. This expansion is fuelled by rising disposable incomes, increased digital connectivity, and a growing aspiration among residents of smaller cities to access the same quality of products and services available in larger urban centres.
What Services Are Driving the Growth?
The demand in non-metro cities mirrors the trends seen in the metros. Specialised veterinary care, once scarce outside major hubs, is a key area of expansion. Startups are establishing clinics that offer more than just basic primary care, bringing advanced diagnostics and even some specialised treatments closer to home for millions. The vet-to-pet ratio in many of these towns remains alarmingly high, but the gap is slowly being addressed. Pet services like professional grooming, training, and boarding facilities are also gaining strong momentum. Companies are innovating with models like mobile grooming vans and at-home veterinary consultations to cater to the demand for convenience. Online retail has been a massive catalyst, with quick-commerce platforms making premium pet food, toys, and healthcare products accessible to pet owners everywhere, breaking down previous distribution barriers.
The Startups Seizing the Opportunity
This expansion is being powered by a mix of established players and agile startups. Companies like Zigly are planning to expand their network of comprehensive pet care centres across multiple cities, offering everything from veterinary services to retail under one roof. Digital-first platforms like Supertails are building entire ecosystems around pet parenting, combining e-commerce with online vet consultations. Even physical retail chains like Just Dogs are using a franchise model to establish a presence in over 30 cities. This new wave of businesses understands that access should not be determined by geography and are creating scalable models to bring organised, high-quality care to previously underserved communities across regional India.
