Visas, Flights, and First Steps
Getting to Oman is straightforward for Indian citizens. The easiest route is the online e-visa system run by the Royal Oman Police. A 10-day tourist visa costs around OMR 5 (approx. ₹1,100), making it an affordable starting point. Processing is usually
quick, often taking just a few working days. For even easier access, Indians holding a valid visa from the US, UK, Schengen Area, Canada, Australia, or Japan may be eligible for visa-free entry for up to 14 days, though it's wise to verify the latest rules before booking. To snag the best flight deals, book your tickets to Muscat well in advance, especially if travelling during peak season (October to March). Direct flights are available from major Indian cities, keeping travel time short and costs down.
Muscat: Coastal Charms on a Budget
Your Omani adventure will likely begin in Muscat, a capital that gracefully blends modernity with tradition. While luxury resorts line the coast, budget options are available. Look for guesthouses and budget hotels in areas like Ruwi and Muttrah, where prices are more backpacker-friendly. A bed in a simple hotel or guesthouse can be found for OMR 10-15. Exploring the city is cheap and rewarding. A visit to the magnificent Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is free. Spend hours wandering through the labyrinthine alleys of the Muttrah Souq, where the scent of frankincense fills the air. While buying souvenirs can be pricey, window shopping and soaking in the atmosphere costs nothing. For getting around, skip the expensive taxis and use the public 'Mwasalat' buses, which are modern, air-conditioned, and connect most parts of the city for a fraction of the cost.
Wadi Shab: A Natural Wonder
The legendary Wadi Shab is a must-do, and it's surprisingly budget-friendly. The main challenge is getting there, about 1.5 to 2 hours from Muscat. Public transport is not a practical option. The most economical way is to rent a car, especially if you can split the cost (around OMR 15-20 per day) with fellow travellers. This gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace. The entrance to the wadi itself is free; the only mandatory cost is the 1 OMR (approx. ₹220) per person for the short boat ride across the river to the start of the trail. The 45-minute hike that follows takes you through a stunning canyon. The reward at the end is a series of emerald-green pools perfect for a refreshing swim, culminating in a hidden waterfall inside a cave. Pack your own water and snacks to avoid higher prices at the entrance.
Nizwa: Gateway to History
From Muscat, the historic city of Nizwa is about a two-hour drive. Once the capital of Oman, its impressive fort and bustling souq are a window into the country's past. The Mwasalat bus (Route 54) runs from Muscat to Nizwa, with a return ticket costing less than 4 OMR, making it a very affordable way to travel. The entrance fee for the Nizwa Fort is 5 OMR for tourists. Inside, you can explore its massive circular cannon tower, learn about Omani history through well-curated exhibits, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding date palm oasis. Adjacent to the fort, the Nizwa Souq is a great place to observe local life, especially during the lively Friday cattle market. Accommodation in Nizwa includes several budget-friendly guesthouses and hotel apartments, which offer better value than options in Muscat.
Eating Well for Less
One of the best ways to save money and experience authentic Omani culture is through its food. Avoid the pricey hotel restaurants and seek out the small, local coffee shops and eateries, often called 'hole-in-the-walls'. Here, you can get a delicious meal of biryani, shawarma, or grilled meat with rice for just a couple of Omani Rials. Given the large Indian expatriate community, finding affordable and familiar vegetarian food like dal and sabzi is also very easy. Supermarkets like Lulu are another backpacker's best friend. You can stock up on snacks, fruits, and local breads like 'khubz' for very cheap, which is perfect for packing lunches for your day trips to the wadis and mountains.
