Why the Review?
Ajit Agarkar’s contract as chief selector concludes this month, prompting a formal review by the BCCI. Under his watch, India has achieved significant white-ball success, including winning the T20 World Cups in 2024 and 2026, and the Champions Trophy
in 2025. However, the team's recent overseas performance, particularly in England and Ireland, along with a decline in Test results, has reportedly caused concern among board officials. A high-stakes meeting was held on September 3rd, attended by head coach Gautam Gambhir and Centre of Excellence chief VVS Laxman, to discuss the team's stumbles and chart a path forward. Though Agarkar was absent from this meeting, his future remains a key point of discussion. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia has stated that no decision has been made and that the board has confidence in the current panel, but speculation persists.
Contender 1: The Tactical Mastermind, VVS Laxman
VVS Laxman has emerged as a strong front-runner should the BCCI decide on a change. Currently the head of the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (formerly NCA), Laxman has been instrumental in mentoring India’s next generation of talent. His deep involvement with the developmental pipeline gives him unparalleled insight into the country's domestic talent pool. His calm and composed demeanour is seen as a major asset for a role that requires navigating complex player dynamics and high-pressure decisions. Laxman also has hands-on experience with the senior team, having served as interim head coach on several occasions. While some reports suggest he may not want the extensive travel involved, his existing role within the BCCI ecosystem makes him a logical and respected choice to bring a fresh, strategic perspective to the selection committee.
Contender 2: The Fearless Icon, Virender Sehwag
Whenever the chief selector's job is discussed, Virender Sehwag’s name inevitably comes up. His legendary status as one of cricket’s most aggressive and instinctive openers makes him a fan favourite. Sehwag’s philosophy of backing players to express themselves without fear could be a refreshing change. However, his potential appointment comes with caveats. In the past, Sehwag has denied being approached for the role and has shown little interest in applying himself, partly due to the reported salary being significantly lower than his earnings from media and promotional work. While his cricketing brain is unquestioned, the administrative and political navigation required for the chief selector's role might be a different challenge altogether for the outspoken former opener.
Contender 3: The Modern Strategist, Ashish Nehra
Ashish Nehra’s stock as a cricketing mind has skyrocketed since he coached the Gujarat Titans to an IPL title in their debut season. His success has showcased a sharp, modern, and data-savvy approach to the game. Nehra is known for his excellent rapport with younger players and a deep understanding of the demands of multi-format cricket. Like Sehwag, Nehra has previously shown reluctance to take on a full-time role with the national team, having reportedly turned down an offer to become the T20 coach to honour his IPL commitments and spend time with his family. However, his name continues to circulate in discussions about key BCCI roles. His appointment would signal a move towards a more tactically flexible and T20-influenced selection philosophy, which could be vital in shaping the future of Indian cricket.
