For decades, a career in space in India largely meant one thing: working for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). While ISRO remains the backbone of the nation's space program, the landscape has changed dramatically. The government's 2020 reforms
opened the sector to private companies, leading to a boom in startups. As of mid-2026, India is home to more than 400 space-tech startups, with private investment surging. This new ecosystem, facilitated by the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), means roles are no longer just in research and government missions. IIST, in particular, offers a direct pipeline for its top graduates into ISRO. However, a degree from any reputable engineering college with a strong focus on fundamentals can be a launchpad. Students should aim for a high aggregate score, as organizations like ISRO often have a minimum requirement of 65% or a 6.84 CGPA for their scientist and engineer roles.
Develop In-Demand Technical Skills
A degree gets you in the door, but specific technical skills will define your career trajectory. Software proficiency is critical across the board. Programming languages like Python, C++, and the simulation software MATLAB are essential for roles in data analysis, mission planning, and systems engineering. Expertise in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software is fundamental for design engineers. The modern space ecosystem requires more than just engineers and scientists. As hundreds of startups emerge, there is a growing need for professionals in business development, finance, marketing, and human resources who understand the unique challenges of the space industry. Space law and policy is another emerging field, as private companies navigate domestic and international regulations. Designers are needed to work on everything from component ergonomics to branding. Even fields like medicine and biology are crucial for human spaceflight missions, studying the effects of space on the human body. If your passion is space but your aptitude isn't in core engineering, look for these vital supporting roles that help the industry function and grow.
Gain Practical, Hands-On Experience
Theoretical knowledge must be paired with practical application. Actively seek out internships at ISRO, DRDO, and the growing number of private aerospace companies like Skyroot Aerospace and Agnikul Cosmos. These provide invaluable hands-on experience and a realistic view of the industry. Participating in student competitions, such as model rocketry challenges, satellite design contests, and space-themed hackathons, is another excellent way to build skills and a project portfolio. Many universities also have student clubs focused on space technology or robotics. This kind of proactive engagement demonstrates passion and initiative to potential employers and gives you tangible projects to discuss in interviews.
