Why Humidity Is Your Laundry's Worst Enemy
The science of drying is simple: water from your wet clothes needs to evaporate into the air. However, when the air is already saturated with moisture—as it often is during India's rainy season—this process slows to a crawl. Think of the air as a sponge;
if it's already full of water, it can't absorb much more. High humidity means the air around your clothes is too damp to accept the moisture they need to release. A cold, dry day can actually dry clothes faster than a warm, humid one. This is why clothes that dry in hours during the summer can take days during the monsoon, leading to that frustratingly musty smell.
The Hidden Costs of Dampness
A single load of laundry can release up to two litres of water into your home's atmosphere. This excess moisture dramatically increases indoor humidity levels, creating an ideal breeding ground for mould, mildew, and dust mites. These unwelcome guests can cause unsightly black spots on walls and ceilings, damage wooden furniture, and trigger allergies, asthma, and other respiratory issues. The musty smell on your clothes is a sign of bacteria multiplying in the damp fabric. The World Health Organization recommends keeping indoor humidity between 40% and 60%, but a load of indoor laundry can push it well above 70%.
Rethink Your Laundry Rhythm
The headline is right: you need more time between loads, but it's not about a specific number of hours. The key is to wait until the first load is completely dry and the room's humidity has returned to a normal level before introducing another batch of wet clothes. Hanging a second wet load while the first is still drying only compounds the problem, creating a perpetually damp environment. A good rule of thumb is to ensure one batch is fully dry, put away, and the room has been aired out before you even consider starting the next wash cycle. If you can't get one load dry within a day, putting on a second one is setting yourself up for failure.
Create a Better Drying Zone
You can't change the weather, but you can control your indoor environment. First, dedicate a single, well-ventilated room for drying. Don't drape clothes all over the house, as this spreads moisture everywhere. Place your drying rack where air can circulate freely—not pushed against a wall. Open a window for at least 15-20 minutes to allow humid indoor air to escape. Running a fan, even a simple pedestal fan, can make a huge difference by circulating air and speeding up evaporation. For those in extremely humid areas, a dehumidifier is a game-changer. It actively pulls moisture from the air, helping to maintain a healthy humidity level below 60% and significantly cutting down drying time.
Smarter Habits for Faster Drying
A few small changes to your laundry routine can have a big impact. Before hanging clothes, run an extra spin cycle in your washing machine. A high-speed spin (1000-1200 rpm) can remove a surprising amount of excess water, giving you a head start on drying. When hanging clothes, give each item space. Overcrowding a drying rack traps moisture and prevents airflow. Hang shirts, kurtas, and pants on hangers to maximize air exposure and let gravity assist. Heavier items like jeans and towels will naturally take longer, so give them prime position where airflow is best. Finally, never leave a wet load sitting in the washing machine, as musty smells and mildew can develop in just a few hours in a warm, humid environment.
