Planning an overnight train journey? A key rule from Indian Railways might affect how you use your gadgets. The power to all charging points is switched off between 11 PM and 5 AM, a measure that balances convenience with a critical priority: safety.
The Rule: A Six-Hour Blackout
Indian Railways has mandated that all mobile and laptop charging sockets in train coaches be turned off for six hours every night, specifically from 11 PM to 5 AM. This is not a new guideline but a strict enforcement of a rule that has been in place since 2014. The Railway Board recently re-emphasised this directive for all zonal railways, instructing staff to ensure compliance without any exceptions. To make sure the rule is followed, officials and supervisors will be conducting surprise inspections on trains during their night runs. So, if you find the charging point near your berth is dead after 11 PM, it is not a fault; it is a deliberate safety measure.
Why the Nightly Shutdown? Fire Safety
The primary reason behind this restriction is to prevent fire-related accidents. The risk of fire from electronic devices is highest when they are left charging unattended for long periods, such as when passengers are asleep. Faulty chargers, overheating batteries, and low-quality electronic accessories can easily short-circuit and spark a fire. The rule was originally introduced on the recommendation of the Commissioner of Railway Safety after a fatal fire on the Bengaluru-Hazur Sahib Nanded Express in 2013. The recent push for stricter enforcement came after a new incident in October 2026, where a passenger's power bank reportedly exploded while charging overnight on a South Eastern Railway train, filling the coach with smoke and causing panic. Onboard staff had failed to switch off the power points as required, highlighting the need for stricter adherence to the rule.
Which Trains Does This Apply To?
The directive from the Railway Board has been issued to all zonal railways, making it a pan-India rule applicable to most long-distance and overnight trains. While the initial 2014 rule focused on AC coaches, the safety principle has been broadly applied since. Passengers on all classes of travel, from sleeper to air-conditioned coaches, should expect the charging points to be inactive during the restricted hours. While some newer, modern trains like the Vande Bharat Express may feature more advanced electrical systems with better safety monitoring, the official advice remains to avoid overnight charging for safety. The blanket 11 PM to 5 AM shutdown is the standard protocol you should anticipate on your journey.
A Traveller's Guide to Staying Powered
While the rule prioritises safety, it does require some planning from passengers. Losing access to charging points can be inconvenient, especially on long journeys where phones are used for everything from entertainment to ordering food. Here are a few simple tips to ensure your devices stay charged and you have a hassle-free trip:
1. Charge Before You Board: Make it a habit to arrive at the station with your phone, laptop, and other gadgets fully charged.
2. Use Daytime Hours: The charging points are operational outside the 11 PM to 5 AM window. Use the day and evening hours to top up your devices before the power is cut.
3. Invest in a Power Bank: A good quality, fully charged power bank is your best friend on an overnight train journey. It allows you to charge your phone at your convenience without depending on the train's sockets. However, be sure to use a reliable brand to avoid the very risks the rule is meant to prevent.
4. Activate Power-Saving Mode: Switch your phone and other devices to low-power or battery saver mode overnight. This will significantly reduce battery drain while you sleep, ensuring you wake up with enough charge for the morning.
