Navi Mumbai: A New Gateway Opens
After years of anticipation, the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) began domestic commercial operations on December 25, 2025. This massive greenfield airport is designed to alleviate the immense pressure on Mumbai's existing Chhatrapati Shivaji
Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). The next major milestone is the commencement of international flights, scheduled to begin on July 15, 2026. Air India Express is set to launch the inaugural international service with a direct flight to Abu Dhabi, initially operating a few times a week before increasing frequency. Cargo freighter services are also slated to begin the same day, marking NMIA's arrival as a crucial hub for both passengers and goods.
Indore: International Ambitions Reignited
Indore's Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport is also re-establishing its international credentials. After a suspension of overseas flights for over four months, direct international services are resuming. An Air India Express flight to Abu Dhabi is scheduled to start on July 15, 2026, operating multiple times a week. This new route replaces a previously suspended service to Sharjah and is seen as a strategic upgrade. While the previous service was popular, the connection to Abu Dhabi's Zayed International Airport offers travellers from Madhya Pradesh a gateway to over 80 cities in Europe, North America, and the Middle East, potentially reducing reliance on layovers in Delhi or Mumbai.
The Practical Impact for Travellers
For millions of people, these developments mean more than just new airport terminals. The primary benefits are convenience, time, and potentially cost savings. For residents of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, especially those in Navi Mumbai, Thane, and nearby areas, NMIA eliminates the long journey to the congested CSMIA. Similarly, travellers across Madhya Pradesh can avoid the hassle and expense of a connecting domestic flight to a larger hub for international journeys. The introduction of new routes and increased airline competition often leads to more competitive fares, making international travel more accessible. NMIA is also set to be a hub of modern technology, with features like AI-powered surveillance and biometric screening aimed at creating a faster, more seamless passenger experience.
Economic Ripples and Cargo Potential
The economic impact of these airports extends far beyond passenger travel. NMIA is a mega-infrastructure project expected to be a game-changer for Maharashtra's economy, driving investment in real estate, logistics, and hospitality. Property values in areas surrounding the new airport have already seen significant appreciation. The airport's planned capacity to handle 2.5 million tonnes of cargo annually will be a major boost for exports and trade. For Indore, enhancing air cargo is a strategic priority to support its growing pharmaceutical, engineering, and agricultural industries. The establishment of a robust international cargo hub is seen as a critical step in making Madhya Pradesh a major logistics centre.
The Big Unanswered Questions
Despite the progress, several questions remain. For Navi Mumbai, the initial launch of international flights is just the beginning. It remains to be seen how quickly other international airlines will add services and to which destinations beyond the initial Gulf routes. The airport is also being built in phases, with long-term plans to handle up to 90 million passengers annually; the timeline for this full expansion is still unfolding. For Indore, the key question is whether the new Abu Dhabi flight will be followed by other much-anticipated routes to destinations like Singapore and Bangkok, which have been discussed. Sustaining these international routes depends on consistent passenger demand and favourable operating economics for airlines, which will be the ultimate test of these renewed ambitions.
