The Big News: Visa-Free Stays Continue
In a significant move for Indian tourists, the Thai government has confirmed it will continue to offer visa-free entry. After some confusion caused by a proposed policy change in May, authorities have scrapped plans that would have ended the visa waiver
for Indians. Instead, Indian passport holders will be granted a 30-day visa-exempt stay upon arrival. This decision reverses an earlier, unactivated proposal to end the scheme, which had led to a drop in arrivals from India. The government acknowledged the importance of the Indian market, which is the third-largest source of tourists for Thailand, and acted to maintain the ease of travel.
Why the Policy Shift?
The decision to maintain, yet modify, the visa policy stems from a mix of economic and administrative goals. The previous 60-day visa-free stay, part of a wider program for 93 countries, was revised. The new 30-day period was deemed more aligned with the typical travel behaviour of Indian tourists, who on average stay for about seven days. Tourism Minister Surasak Phancharoenworakul stated that the confusion over the May proposal negatively impacted arrivals, prompting the cabinet to approve the clear 30-day visa-free rule to support the vital tourism industry. This move ensures predictability for travellers while also allowing the government to address concerns about foreigners misusing long-stay visas.
