The much-awaited Vande Bharat Sleeper Express between Bengaluru and Mumbai has been flagged off, heralding a new chapter in overnight travel. This service promises to slash journey times and elevate comfort between India's tech and financial capitals.
A New Era for Overnight Travel
On November 1, 2026, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express began its inaugural journey from SMVT Bengaluru to Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), marking a significant upgrade for one of India's busiest travel corridors. This service, the third of its kind in the country, is designed to make overnight train journeys faster, more comfortable, and a compelling alternative to other modes of transport. The 16-coach train aims to connect the two metropolises in approximately 16 hours, a substantial reduction from the 22 to 24 hours taken by most other trains on this route. The regular service, operating six days a week, is set to commence from Mumbai on November 2 and from Bengaluru on November 3.
Inside the Vande Bharat Sleeper
The Vande Bharat Sleeper is not just about speed; it's a complete overhaul of the passenger experience. The train is composed of 16 fully air-conditioned coaches, including eleven AC 3-Tier, four AC 2-Tier, and one AC First Class coach, accommodating a total of 823 passengers. The berths are designed to be wider and have better cushioning than those in existing premium trains like the Rajdhani Express. Each berth is equipped with its own reading light and charging sockets. The train features automatic doors, sealed gangways for reduced noise and a smoother ride, and advanced safety systems like the indigenous KAVACH anti-collision technology. Onboard hygiene is also a priority, with modern bio-vacuum toilets and sensor-based taps.
The Journey Redefined: Timings and Stoppages
The new service significantly cuts down travel time. Train number 27652 will depart from SMVT Bengaluru at 7:45 PM and arrive at CSMT Mumbai at 11:55 AM the next day, completing the journey in about 16 hours and 10 minutes. In the opposite direction, train number 27651 will leave CSMT at 8:10 PM and reach SMVT Bengaluru at 12:00 PM noon, taking just under 16 hours. With a maximum operational speed of 130 km/h on this route, the train's distributed power system allows for quicker acceleration and deceleration, contributing to the time savings. The train will have only eight commercial stoppages between the two hubs: Anantapur, Guntakal, Raichur, Yadgir, Kalaburagi, Solapur, Pune, and Kalyan, ensuring a faster end-to-end journey.
Train vs. Plane: A New Choice for Travellers
While a direct flight between Bengaluru and Mumbai takes about two hours, the Vande Bharat Sleeper presents a strong case when considering total travel time and cost. Factoring in the time taken to travel to and from airports, check_in procedures, and baggage claim, the door_to_door travel time for a flight can easily exceed five to six hours. The sleeper train, conversely, uses the night for the bulk of its journey. Passengers can board in the evening, sleep through the night, and arrive at their destination by noon the next day, effectively saving a productive day. The expected fares, reportedly lower than last_minute flight prices, make it an attractive and economical option for families, business travellers, and tourists alike.
