The ‘Complimentary’ Perk Gets a Condition
Not long ago, simply holding a premium credit card was your golden ticket into airport lounges across India. That reality has shifted. Faced with rising costs and immense popularity, banks and card issuers are moving away from the ‘free for all’ model.
The term 'complimentary' now almost always comes with an asterisk. This benefit, which can transform a stressful layover into a comfortable break, is increasingly becoming a conditional privilege tied directly to your spending habits. Many cardholders now discover at the lounge entrance that their access has been deactivated, not due to an expired card, but because they failed to meet a specific, often overlooked, requirement.
Understanding the New Milestone Model
The most common condition now attached to lounge access is a minimum spending milestone. Instead of granting a set number of visits per year unconditionally, many banks now require you to spend a certain amount of money in a preceding period to unlock the benefit for the next. This is typically measured on a quarterly basis. For example, a card might require a spend of ₹5,000 to ₹20,000 in one quarter (e.g., January to March) to make you eligible for lounge visits in the subsequent quarter (April to June). Some premium cards have much higher thresholds, demanding spends of ₹75,000 or more per quarter. If you don't hit that spending target, the perk simply doesn't activate for the next period, and you'll be turned away or asked to pay the walk-in fee, which can be upwards of ₹2,000.
How to Track and Meet Your Targets
Proactive management is the only way to ensure your lounge access remains active. First, identify your card's specific rules. This information is available on your bank's website or within your credit card app. Check the 'Benefits' or 'Rewards' section for details on the spending threshold and the tracking period. Set a calendar reminder a few weeks before the end of each quarter to check your progress. Most banking apps provide a running total of your statement's spending, making it easy to see where you stand. If you find yourself falling short, this gives you time to plan your expenses. Consider channeling your regular monthly spending—like groceries, utility bills, and fuel—onto that specific card to ensure you meet the goal without overspending.
Strategic Spending Can Secure Your Access
Meeting these milestones doesn't necessarily mean you have to spend more money overall; it just requires more strategic planning. If you have a large purchase on the horizon, like a new appliance or a flight booking, time it to fall within a quarter where you need to boost your spending. For couples or families, using an add-on card can sometimes contribute to the primary card's spending target, but it's crucial to verify this with your bank, as rules for supplementary cards vary. Some premium cards offer unlimited access to add-on cardholders, while most others treat them separately. The key is to consolidate enough of your planned, everyday expenditure onto the right card to consistently hit the required number.
What Happens When You Miss a Milestone?
Missing a spending target is not a permanent penalty. If you fail to meet the required spend in a quarter, you will typically lose your complimentary lounge access for the following quarter. However, the system resets for the next cycle. For example, if your spending from January to March was insufficient, your access will be blocked from April to June. But you can immediately start working towards the milestone for the April to June quarter. If you successfully meet the target in that period, your lounge access will be reactivated for the July to September quarter. It’s a continuous cycle of earning your perk, so one slow quarter doesn't mean you've lost the benefit forever.
