The Debit Card Secret
For years, complimentary airport lounge access was seen as the exclusive domain of premium credit card holders and business-class flyers. However, a growing number of banks in India now offer this luxurious perk on their debit cards. It's a game-changer
for regular travellers, turning long layovers into productive and relaxing experiences. These benefits are typically tied to higher-end debit card variants like Visa Signature, RuPay Platinum, or Mastercard World. The key is knowing which card you have and what conditions apply, as the era of unconditional free access is fading.
The New Rules of Access
It's crucial to understand that 'free' often comes with conditions. Many banks have shifted to a spend-based model. For instance, you might need to spend a certain amount in the preceding quarter to qualify for lounge access. HDFC Bank requires a spend of ₹20,000 in a six-month period on its RuPay Platinum Debit Card for one lounge visit. Similarly, some Axis Bank cards require a minimum spend of ₹5,000 in the previous three months. Others, like IDFC FIRST Bank's Wealth Debit Card, tie the benefit to maintaining a high average monthly balance. Always check your bank’s specific terms to avoid disappointment at the lounge entrance.
Top Debit Cards for Lounge Access
Several debit cards stand out for their lounge benefits. The HDFC Bank EasyShop Platinum Debit Card offers two complimentary domestic lounge visits per quarter, subject to spending criteria. The SBI Platinum International Debit Card also provides lounge access, with the number of visits depending on the card network (Visa or Mastercard). For those seeking more frequent access, premium cards like the HDFC Bank Infiniti Debit Card provide up to four visits per quarter without a spending requirement, though it's usually reserved for high-value customers. The Bank of Baroda EaseMyTrip co-branded debit card is another strong contender, offering two domestic lounge visits per quarter.
Understanding RuPay Card Changes
RuPay debit cards were once a popular and straightforward way to access lounges. However, as of April 2026, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has discontinued complimentary lounge access for the widely held RuPay Platinum variant. This means many users who previously enjoyed this perk may find it no longer works. Some banks may continue to offer lounge access on customised or higher-tier RuPay cards, like the RuPay Select, but it will almost always be tied to a minimum spending condition. For example, a Union Bank of India RuPay Select card requires a spend of ₹5,000 in the previous quarter to unlock one domestic lounge visit.
How to Use Your Card at the Lounge
The process for entry has also evolved. While you could once just swipe your card, many banks now use a voucher-based system. After meeting the eligibility criteria, the bank may send you an SMS or email with a link to generate a QR code or voucher. You must present this digital voucher along with your boarding pass at the lounge reception. A nominal fee, typically ₹2, is charged to your card to validate it. It’s a good practice to check your eligibility and generate the voucher before you even leave for the airport.
What About Transit Dining?
The headline's promise of 'transit dining' is mostly fulfilled within the airport lounge itself, where complimentary food and beverages are standard. This can range from a buffet spread and snacks to soft drinks and sometimes even alcoholic beverages. Separate 'dining' perks on debit cards usually refer to discounts at airport restaurants or via programs like EazyDiner or Axis Bank's Dining Delights, rather than fully free meals outside of a lounge. For example, some Axis Bank cards offer discounts at partner restaurants, which can be a valuable perk during transit if you don't have lounge access.
