Why Hotel Bookings Are Under the Microscope
The requirement for proof of accommodation isn't new, but its enforcement has become much stricter, especially for younger travellers. Thai authorities want to ensure that tourists are genuine visitors with clear, verifiable plans. A confirmed hotel booking serves as primary evidence that you have a legitimate place to stay and are not intending to overstay your visa or seek illegal employment. Officials are trying to crack down on individuals who misuse tourist visas. Without a confirmed booking for the duration of your stay, immigration officers may question the purpose of your visit. This scrutiny is part of a larger effort to ensure tourists can financially support themselves throughout their trip and have a fixed travel plan.
More Than Just a Hotel Voucher
While a confirmed hotel booking is critical, it is only one piece of the puzzle. Immigration officials can ask for a range of documents to verify your status as a genuine tourist. A key requirement now being checked is proof of sufficient funds. Travellers should be prepared to show they have at least 20,000 Thai Baht (approximately ₹58,000) in cash per person. Additionally, you must have a confirmed return or onward flight ticket to prove you intend to leave the country within the permitted time. These requirements have always technically been in place for the Visa on Arrival, but they are now being enforced more consistently.
Your Pre-Travel Documentation Checklist
To avoid any issues at immigration, make sure you have all the required documents ready and easily accessible. The Indian Embassy has provided a clear checklist to help travellers. Valid Passport: Must be valid for at least six months from your date of arrival in Thailand. Visa on Arrival (VoA): Be prepared to get this at the airport for a fee of 2,000 THB, payable in cash. Confirmed Hotel Bookings: Printed or digital proof of your accommodation for the entire duration of your stay. Return Flight Ticket: A confirmed ticket for your flight out of Thailand.
